Love my Robert Jones sheath for my 119. Simple and functional. He does the belt loop longer, so the pommel doesnt poke you in the side. Great work, fair price. Might try to get him to make me one for my Buck Endeavor.
It really is a matter of personal taste and I'm sure both sheaths would work fine, but of the two, I like the second one better. I like its appearance and the fact that it is made from basically one piece of leather, which means less stitching to go wrong over time.
Kydex is very durable and performs especially well in wet environments. Not sure how it performs at extreme low temperatures. I've only owned one Kydex sheath and ended up selling it. It was for a Bark River knife and was heavier and bulkier than original leather sheath, believe it or not. The other common problem is that Kydex has a tendency to unnecessarily scratch blades and guards due to their tight fit especially if any debris gets inside. A lot of folks like them, but they're just not for me.
Just saw this one the other day on the big auction site...
Hey everyone, earlier in the thread I asked you guys to help me pick a sheath for my 119, and I got some great feedback. SO I pulled the trigger on what seemed to be agreed upon as the best option. Well, I just got it and I want to share it with you all. It's much nicer than I anticipated!
Carl Thomas Custom 10 oz Water Buffalo, one piece leather.
Pictured here is my 110 and 119, both in their Carl Thomas sheaths.
Here is a close-up of the perfect hand tooling featured on the 119's new sheath
Yes, I really love that part about the guard. It feels extremely secure. Also, the way the belt loop is designed makes the knife angle away from my body, and I've been surprised with how much this helps improve draw time.
Yea, I know, this thread is over a year old, but I like sheaths AND it's my thread, so...
For a few years, I had been looking for a simple, high-ride sheath for my 119 and 105 and recently discovered Rob Kellenberger of RK Leatherworks. Super workmanship, great fit, and the interior snap has been recessed to protect the blade. If you're looking for a high quality sheath at a great price, Google is your friend.
When this thread started, I wasn't a BF member. Read it today, and just wanted to post a couple of pennies' worth of comments, and some photos.
For my Buck 110, I really like the Buck leather sheath that came with it. The only "wish" I had was that I could belt-carry the 110 horizontally.
I had a strip of leather for a lever wrap on my Henry SGC, which I never used on the rifle. It had a great matching color and quality leather, so I stared at both wondering if I could make a horizontal sheath. Came up with this home made mod by attaching the leather wrap to the Buck sheath....it worked out very well from my view. Here are some photos.
Thanks, TAH. You're correct; no mods at all to original sheath. Just twisting & turning of the leather wrap and leather tie....here, there, and everywhere. It happened to position out A-okay!
