Buck "Survival" Knife?

Yes, it can be done. It is just not nearly as common as steel to steel, which made me think the guard was stainless. Either way, impressive and something I would advertise, too. A better way to seal the joint than just epoxy, in my opinion.

So, TAH you have a 2nd opinion. Sam, yes a better way to attach a guard.
I'm glad your keeping up with this topic as it's getting complicated with the shifting. Still, I want to see how this ends. DM

Hi David,

If you're referring to a 2nd opinion on the solder, then no. Just confirming that aluminum can be soldered to stainless and that is what we are seeing in the photo. Sam is an EXCELLENT knifemaker who solders his blade/guard joints with precision. I am just really impressed Buck does this extra step.

I'll throw in a vote for the 124 as well. Classic design with plenty of heft and strength.

I hope to have a 124 myself soon. If I was picking from my collection I think my 119 would do fine. My short nighthawk would be another contender because of its robustness, but the 119 is much better at actual cutting and makes a much nicer feather stick. If I was limited to a folder, the 110 would be my top choice. I often carry it (or a 112) as my only knife when riding horses. With the Kwik thumb stud I can open it one handed and I don't have to worry about it filleting my leg open if I should happen to land on it if I come off the horse or the horse falls on me.

Very cool thread I've enjoyed seeing how the opinions differ. It's also cool to see how many "survival" knife options there are from Buck, a company generally regarded as a maker of hunting and EDC knives.

Now, we're at 12 votes for the 124. Something occurred to me, there are no votes for the M9. Which is a very heavy duty built knife. Perhaps that was too far back and then it was dropped from Buck's line. Whereas the 124 was recently brought back.? DM

Same here. :)

I noticed that too and there are no votes for the 112, which probably has a stronger point than the 110.

Here's a question - What does the 124 offer over the Buckmaster in a survival situation when the Buckmaster was specifically designed for survival?

I fully agree with David. The 124 is a stout, well made, no nonsense American Bowie style knife. When I was a kid, our scoutmaster carried one along with a 1911 A1 on every hike and outing he took us on. I remember him bringing the troop to a halt on a trail on the backside of Lookout Mt. Where he shot a huge copperhead, then pulled out his 124 and lopped it's head off. As a kid I was just so impressed with that big 'ol Bowie knife, it was just everything a knife should be. Been a fan of the 124 ever since.

Hard to argue with this 1967 advertisement. Interesting that back then, Buck called it a holster, not a sheath.

Got it, Max. The 184 certainly has the advantage of storing some goodies in the handle and making quick work of cutting notches.

Not really surprising. The 124 is truly an "all around knife". No wonder it easily made the transformation from sea to land. Very capable of camp work, processing game, and performing tougher survival duty if necessary.
