Cast Iron Beckerheads, Sound Off!

I'll ask Dex. I know he has one. I think Trade might have also tracked one down...

Gus, it's a 30mm can.

So this past fall, I shot this little buck for meat. That's a TM Hunt custom knife that field dressed him.

image_zps2h8tkkvf.jpg

Last night, I started with this big hunk of backstrap that had been marinated for 48 hours in Moore's.

Cut off all the fat, hit it with some Montreal steak seasoning, and began the bacon wrapping.

Here's the finished wraps along with last night's libation. Apparently, once you start beer slumming, it's hard to stop. I blame Jerry D. and that damned Coor's Light.

The Lodge action shots. I learned that, with that much bacon grease dripping down, it's best to have a spray bottle handy or you'll wind up with a bacon inferno.

Done, son.

Pink in the middle and tender and tasty as all get out. Even my Bambi-scarred seven-year-old daughter scarfed down a plate of the tenderloin.

That looks so good. The Lodge Sportsman grill definitely appears to be a handy little culinary apparatus.

I don't think I've ever seen anyone actually taste and critique Coors Light before, but it definitely appears that you've slipped farther down the rabbits hole.

I'll have to bring you some Fall's City (If I can find some) for the next gathering. ;)

Since the 30mm can is the biggest available (only slightly bigger than the 20mm) it would be suitable. What concerns me is that the grill is 19 by 10-1/4 by 8-1/4-inch and the interior of the 30mm can is only 18 11/16 x 14 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches. Of course if it were on the diagonal it should fit.

Yes, it will fit on the diagonal. However, I called Dex the other day, and he pointed out a key difference in newer and older grills. If you see my Lodge grill pictured above, note it has enclosed ends onto which the handle latches. The older version just has nubs there. The slight difference means I have to completely disassemble the newer version to get it to fit in the ammo can. Not a huge deal since it's just two bolts and takes only a couple of minutes. But it is a difference. I have an older version covered in rust that I need to restore soon.

See below...

Dex also managed to find a slightly bigger ammo can. I haven't run across one like it yet.

Here's some kebob win from yesterday.

There are some great images on this thread.

Firstly from me, my identity pass:

Here is a fairly comfortable semi-permanent 'camp' site where I've done a lot of cooking in cast iron. The fire has a rudimentary water jacket around it so we get hot water for washing... a luxury I really appreciate...

Our home has an induction cooktop, and unfortunately my cast iron frypan isn't flat enough on the bottom to work on the new cooktop. However, to get around this I bought a simple little portable gas cooker which gets the pan plenty hot enough. I love to make and eat naan bread. This stuff is ideal to cook when you are away from home because you don't need an oven. I have cooked bread in a cast iron camp oven....which was great.... but I love the chewy texture of the naan, and I find that they are still quite nice to eat after a day or two. The photo below was taken when we were at another person's place for a pot luck dinner. My wife, Jackie, took a casserole and I made naans. I hasten to add that the apron is not my own. In this shot, the naan is being cooked on the first side and it is ballooning up nicely.

I think it is interesting... and kinda logical... that folks here who appreciate a good knife also appreciate basic food preparation in solid cookware.

Best wishes from New Zealand.

Fresh tuna steak, zucchini, crimini mushrooms, white onion, bell peppers, basmati rice with turmeric and cilantro and tomato relish.

$5 antique store score after first round of oven cleaner. I need to find a lid now!

Made some shish kabobs a while back, and for my daughter, I just did a couple of skewers of chicken. Well, the chicken skewers stole the show, and now we make them all the time.

This time, I let the BK-15 in on the action.

The dressing is simply olive oil and some Weber roasted garlic rub.

That looks excellent Guyon.

Psyop, nice score on the Griswold.

Just got it clean with oven cleaner then two light coats of olive oil. The outside is nickel plated so it won't look as good.

Great score with that pan. Looks great now that it's cleaned up.
