After a long day of handle and bolster fitting and handle shaping, I needed a change of pace. Before coming in for dinner I layed out a drop point I've been wanting to do for a while. I got working on it, and decided I'd taper the tang before going in. Now I've done plenty of tapered tangs, but I've always taken the machinist approach and use a fixture on the milling machine, and a face mill. Just for the heck of it I thought I'd try doing this one freehand with a contact wheel and the platten. Not only did it come out perfectly, I had the damn thing done in less time than it would have taken to set the mill up..... I wish I tried it years ago....
