Favorite Rimfires

I traded for this cherry . Nylon 66 .
You lucky dog, great find. A rifle ahead of its time. As a young man I passed on this rifle because of the plastic furniture. Big mistake. I always wished that Remington would re-release this. Nowadays they would probably just screw it up.

I think so too. I also passed on this rifle years ago. Always wanted the Nylon 76 (lever action version), but it never happened. Doesn't bother me that I don't own one. I bought a Marlin 39A as my classic lever action 22. It's still un-scoped.

I never liked the tall blade front sight on the Nylon 66. Yes to "plastic" issues back in the day. But I would have scoped it anyway, probably a 1" tube fixed 4x as was typical for me at that time of my life. I felt that if you couldn't see it well enough to place a good shot with the 4x, you are probably using the wrong caliber or gun. I have since changed that attitude, but still have a number of 22 rifles with 4x scopes on them. I tend just to buy another rifle rather than changing what I already have.

From my now deceased father in law. Now with my son.

My father gave me a 39A Mountie with a straight stock. I eventually put a peep sight on it too. I sold it off when I bought some bolt actions (541S & a Kimber 22 mag). I wish I had kept it for the memories and to pass on to my grandson.

Dave, not only are you a talented craftsmen, but your photographs take the cake as well.

Rimfire's don't really do it for me, but after seeing your S&W and Ruger, I could see myself in one.

I have a Marlin model 60 that has been rock solid reliable and accurate (relative to a .22) for many years. Bought it at a KMart for $50 way back when. Roundcount has to be in the 30k range I would guess. Still humming, but I clean it and take care of it.

I also have a Colt .22 pistol - made in 93 - they only made them for a couple of years.

Accuracy "relative to a .22"? I'll not own a .22LR, or any other firearm, that's not accurate. Most .22LR rifles are more accurate than most shooters are capable of.

With .22LR rifles, I leave them fouled and don't clean them until they malfunction.

Marlin 60, what a classic. When I was younger there were always a couple of 60s in the group when shooting with my buddies. I've always considered it an everyman's rifle like the Ruger 10/22.

Would like to see the Colt pistol.

Nice Standard. When I was 16, a friend's father let us shoot his pair of MK 1's and I was hooked for life. I practically ran to the local gun shop and traded a Colt .45 for a MK II 5 1/2" bull barrel and a MK II Target.

Would love to shoot a M17 sometime. Never had the pleasure.

Those are some some nice groups. I can't see that good any more:D Have to use a scope to get them that small now.

I also don't clean mine generally until I have a problem. The only one I clean regularly is the TC Lynx. It has a tight chamber and gets fouled pretty easily
I have never been a very good shot with open sighted rifles in terms of groups. But I'm always willing to try.

The Marlin M60 is a good shooter 22 and typically shoot very nice groups. Don't own one.

Same deal that Bearcat is tight and needs to have the cylinder swabed out now and then. Lots of the cheap brick ammo won't chamber in it.

I spent some of my youth woods walking with my cousin. I with my Remington 512 & he with his Nylon 66.

I hope they are fond memories for you. Did the same primarily with my brothers. We spent a great deal of time in the woods as we lived in the country, had 200 acres+ to play on, and knew all the neighbors/landowners to we could pretty much do what we liked (without being destructive). The 4 wheelers pretty much ruined it. People started posting their property to keep them out.

I have a basic CZ 452 - very nice. The Marlin (or Glenfield) Model 60 is great, and the Ruger 10-22 is fine. As for handguns, just a Browning Buckmark and a Ruger. They all get the job done.

I received a MK2 Government Target from my now deceased best friend. Have since passed that one on to my son.
