Hello all,

Here is a slim and tidy große messer, an interesting German sword type the name of which means "big knife." This example is about 36" in total length, with a forged beta titanium alloy blade just shy of 28", alloy 89.5Ti 10Nb 0.5Fe. The crossguard is forged 6al4vELI titanium alloy, and is just over 6" long (for size reference).

Although it has its flaws, the balance and feel is spot-on and quite animated. This springy, lively sword is very sharp and dangerous. :] The balance point is about 3" in front of the indestructible crossguard. Pommel is silicon bronze. Grip is neoprene, nylon, and leather.

Bonus: In addition to taking advantage of a name that in English means "makes a gross mess," making this sword allows me to use the hilarious giant German "B," which is a sharp "S" sound. Große messer. Große. Große. Damn that's fun. :D

Enjoy!

Beautiful work. 2 questions. First, is the sword flat spined or does the tip curve upward somewhat? My poor eyeballs see it both ways depending on how I hold y tablet. The second question is what is the scabbard construction?

Thanks guys, I'm glad you like it. Making the blade was a challenge. Here is a photo of the naked blade before heat-treatment, showing the stepped tang:

zzyzzogeton: The entire spine is slightly curved and beveled, with a bit more upsweep at the tip. The scabbard is simple, a three-layer sandwich of poplar, with 32 wooden pins. Twelve of the pins are at the mouth end along with the leather wrap, for protection of the user's hand from the sword possibly breaking out of the scabbard in case of a spirited/drunken cutting spree.

nice. A spirited/drunken cutting spree with this beast sounds like a lot of fun!

Swords are super fun. I use mine for demolition, yard maintenance, making large objects fit into a dumpster, and crackhead deterrence! :D
