It followed me home (Part 2)

That is interesting for sure.

Several really good looking Connecticuts as well.

Love that odd Underhill. The upturned haft would facilitate hewing.

Me too, I am very curious about it's specific intended use as I have never seen that shape before. Such a small poll, and hardened and beveled. Meant to strike or be struck?

That third one down on the right, looks like a tool it's owner was proud of, relied on, and took great care of.
And with such a beautiful handle on it, I wouldn't be surprised if it was original.

New to me and I don't see it in any of my old catalogs. I hadn't thought about it being made for striking but my gut says no. Maybe for setting the spike below the surface to be hewn as with some adzes.

The poll reminds me of the pointed end of a ship carpenter's maul.

So maybe a combo tool, half ship carpenter's axe, half ship carpenter's maul.

This website describes a ship carpenter's pin maul, used to drive and countersink spikes and wooden pins.

Of course I wouldn't discount other variations.

I am only guessing because I have never seen this pattern in a large axe, only in hatchet before. But I will look through some more of my old catalogs. So, I guess ship carpenter or butchering. JB, this one is a keeper!

was camping 4 years ago and forgot my axe at home so I headed off to a local flea market to find an axe. the only axe I came across was an old rusty double bit axe. The guy wanted 15$ so I offered 10$, he said "its real old" so i gave him the 15$ and off i went with my new Black Raven. I did not know what I had until i got home and thought of researching it. made a nice case for it and there it sits.
