Given what you want the knife to do, is D2 steel and improvement over 1095? It is (in this knife) harder, more chippy, less tough, with better edge retention. The dogs head design of the knife might be an improvement if you don't like having a guard on the spine side of the blade.
I'm seeing $90 USD for the 1219 and $136 for the 1292 (both rubber handle and hard sheath) -- 1292 has better edge retention and a thicker tang with more pronounced radius at the blade/tang junction to make up for the lack of differential temper.
while I like D2 steel, I also like the leather handle on the $100 dog's head better than the molded rubber...
The easy answer from me is OG 1219. I want a D2 with no serrations, but I have no real world use for it other than it being pretty freaking cool. I don't even have a problem with the guard on the back (I'm not sure why other people do, I can choke up just fine).
