When I got my Grik, which was my first experience with the new HTR thumb ramp, I didn't like it at all and removed it, finding it easier to open using the bare hole. But just got a Night Force, and really like the thumb ramp on that. For my hands anyway, it seems to be a matter of size, both in terms of the knife and the thumb ramp. The Night Force is a larger knife, with a larger diameter thumb ramp, and it just works so much better than on the Grik. So, I have to say that my overall opinion of the thump ramp has changed for the better, but on smaller knives I don't think it works as well (unless maybe you have tiny hands).
