Osprey K/T Sheath Thread

Nice post Phil. I like his work as well. He's the one that made my double carry rig for the Camp/EDK combo. I really like those taco sheaths. I had been debating on getting one for a summer trip and now I will for sure. I've also thought about buying the stuff to make them myself. Looks kind of fun...

Thanks Phillip. It was handling your double carry rig that made me want to give David's sheaths a try.

Phillip L,

Thank you for sharing you pictures of your Mamushi, I love the simple elegance on the black Joufuu sheath, Bud does excellent work and I feel his sheaths compliment my work nicely! How do you like to carry it?

Osprey Knife & Tool EDU with a JouFuu Crossdraw sheath that just arrived today. Took some quick pics as I was losing the Sun and got a couple dirt smudges on either the knife or sheath in a couple of the pics. Did no editing to these pics except cropping and am happy how they turned out. Really like how much the orange pops on both of them and well they match!

Jerry, that's a really sweet package! The orange stitching sets the whole this off. Now that you have some pants for your EDU I hope it gets plenty of belt time for you!
Thank you for sharing with us!

I have a strong preference for kydex sheaths as they work better in wet conditions.

Here's my OKT in kydex sheaths

OKT Model & Variant: Ranger
Sheath Maker & Model: Mashed Cat Outfitters kydex sheath with drop loop
Sheath Maker Source/Contact info: http://www.mashedcat.com

Eric Lind from Mashed Cat Outfitters is my goto guy for my kydex sheaths. The fit and finish of his work is one of the best out there. The blade always locks with an assuring click. Once locked in, it stays firmly in it with no rattle. You can't go wrong with Eric if you need a kydex sheath.

Don

Don, I have a strong preference towards Kydex as well for my field knives, these look like excellent set-ups I will have to check these guys out for some of my own needs at some point.
I still prefer leather sheath, scabbard, or saya for my collector pieces.

Thank you for sharing with us!

Your Unnamed scores from sale thread 1/17/17:
One Off #1
3/32" (.102") CPM154 Tapered Tang Charcoal Grey G10 over Grey G10 w/ White Accent liners and Pins (Sandblasted)
OAL 6 1/2'' Blade 3 1/4''

One Off #2
3/32" (.099") CPM154 Tapered Tang Double Black G10 (Sandblasted)
OAL 7 7/8" Blade 3 5/8''

My Unnamed Prototype (that I still fondly refer to as The Intimidator) from sale thread 12/8/16
Unnamed Prototype-
1/8" (.139) CPM154 Tapered Tang Commando Double Black Canvas Micarta (Sandblasted) *Swedge Unsharpened
OAL 8" Blade 3 3/4"

I'm pretty sure your One Off #2 would come close to my Unnamed Prototype/Intimidator where a sheath was concerned. I'm not sure how your One Off #1 and One Off #2 compare next to each other.

To add another model to the mix, here are the specs for my Mamushi from the 1/17/17 sale:
Mamushi- (Guardless Variant)
3/32" (.099") CPM154 Tapered Tang LVA Carbon Fiber over Black w/ White accent liners
OAL 8” Blade 3 7/8”

Below are pics of my Mamushi and Intimidator with a JouFuu HB-2 Ambidextrous belt sheath. It is Cordovan with black stitching. If you want one of Bud's sheaths, you can check his site and/or post a request in his Blade Forums sub forum Build Board, he usually responds pretty quickly and usually within a few days to a week, they'll show up on his website joufuu.com but you have to watch that site and grab them. If you want more sheath coverage, the next size up is a HB-3 or HB-3 Extended. His 4"er sheath model would be too tall.

HB2wMamushiandIntimidator-vi.jpg

Those are some nice setups you have there Jerry! Thank you for sharing the comparison photos and starting this thread it has proven to be very resourceful so far.

Nice setup Bobby! I like what you have going on here. Thanks for sharing with us!

I bought my original Raptor for bird & trout type outdoor activities where I expected wet, slimy, and/or dirty conditions. I decided that kydex would best compliment the stainless & synthetic knife for these conditions.
After doing a little research and some e-mail conversations, I decided to send my Raptor and a Fiddleback Bourbon Street Skinner to David Brown at “Buy Brown Industries.” I chose the fold-over taco style because I wanted to keep the size to a minimum. I specified Tek-Loks for ease of on & off attachment.

The build quality of these sheaths is excellent. When I first received them, I thought maybe they were too tight. They are not. After mostly using leather for a long time, I was not used to the motion and snap of the kydex releasing. The slight flare out on the top of the handle gives a nice push off point for your thumb.

The sheaths are well designed in that there is adequate clearance on the sides of the blade to prevent scratching of the blade from a little debris or the finish of the kydex itself. Think about it. A properly designed kydex sheath only needs to fit tightly at the blade tip and the front of the handle to lock in the knife securely. The rest of the sheath is just there to protect you from the edge and the knife from the elements. David Brown does a nice job of masking the blade to provide adequate clearance on the finished sheath. I have drawn and re-sheathed both knives dozens of times each and there is no hint of scratching.

The only “improvement” I made for my liking was to further polish the radii at the mouths of the sheaths with fine & superfine wet-dry sandpaper to make re-sheathing a little smoother.

I am happy overall with these sheaths. If you are interested in something similar, you can learn more here:

Phil,

Thank you for providing you input and photos here as well, I am I like this style of Kydex for most of my EDC purposes there are a few exceptions where I like the pancake style. It appears that there is some sort of liner on the interior of the kydex? This style is what I would use for an EDC sheath on a Raptor I would carry, Providing rigidity and protection for the thin tip of the knife.

Thanks for the comment Chris. In answer to your question, there is no added liner in the kydex. I can see how the lighting in the last photo creates the illusion of a liner. The first 1/2" of the inside of the sheath does have a smoother finish where is was molded to the front of the handle.

These are my first taco style kydex. All of my other ones have been the pancake style. As you pointed out, the choice comes down to application for a given knife.

. The Mamushi, or the sheath? I really like the Mamushi (1/8 CPM154) and I' been carrying it instead of a FF Patch (3/32 O1) lately. The weight difference is noticeable, but the Mamushi does all the same stuff and provides a little extra knife when I need it. I wear Carhartt work pants a lot and normally carry this inside the small pocket on the lower right side leg. It works very well. I got the shortened clip because the normal ISP clips have scratched the bumper on my truck where I walk around and get too close.

I was asking about both, But you figured it out and answered my question. I am really happy you like your Mamushi! That's how I would carry it as well, I hate having things in my front and back pockets, I am a big fan of cargo pants. Thanks for answering my question

Just received a few back from Buy Brown for my Trailhand and the one-off. They have Spiderco G-clips and I will flip them to the other side for inside the pocket carry. They compliment my .45 shield nicely. I think the one off will be my go to for while.

Thank you for sharing this, I remember you coming by my table this year! I also remembered I was severely lacking sleep and a little flustered when you came up trying to get everything situated at my table before the mad rush, I wish I had gotten more time to speak with you and more of myself. Anyhow it was great to meet you and I hope it's not the last time we meet again!

I really like these sheath setups! A man that is cut from the same cloth as far as our appeal to knives and firearms!
Thank you for sharing Phillip!

I'm kicking around an inverted neck carry set up for a Mini-Mamushi. Does anyone have a similar set up? I'm just in the planning stages so I haven't contacted any kydex makers yet. I know inverted can sometimes present retention problems with some knives.

I recently got one of Bud’s ISP made specifically for the Mamushi for my DE Commando.

I have the same set up. My Mamushi is so pointy and sharp after a few days of pocket carry the tip is peeking out of the sheath. Now I'm afraid to keep it in my front pocket. I think I'll have to get a belt sheath from Bud for it.

Couple things ..
1. Send it back to me and I'll repair it for free, minus the return shipping ($10).
2. Piercing the welt is not normal. It usually occurs from pushing on the butt of the knife when clipping the sheath to your pants. The sheath stops and you keep pushing against the knife and it cuts right thru. I created a video about this;

I also have a Mamushi sheath from Bud. I love the sheath, but just like yours the point poked out the bottom. I am careful when clipping it into my pocket not to push on the handle. Either way I just glued a little strip of leather onto the edge of the sheath to give it a little extra thickness there.

It is a great sheath though. Fits the knife perfectly.
