Osprey K/T Work in Progress/Preview 01/23/17 - Updated 02/08/17

Well, it looks like the glow carbon fiber just glows on the spine parts and not the sides of the handles. I was somewhat joking about tritium pins because you'd probably hose em up when you either pounded them in or sanded on their ends. But the idea is still there ... glowing pins so there is something on the side that glows. Maybe make pins out of some type of light activated glowing material??

With regard to tritium, that's what is used in night sights, key fobs, etc. A few random links for reference:

btw, I'm with Abe and think you should give up those cigarettes ;)

Thanks,
Jerry
Two thumbs way up! 👍👍

I realize this is mostly in jest but nix the tritium. With a half-life of ~ 12 years this would only be a cool glow for you, and not for very long. Knives are forever (relatively) ;)

Agreed! Can you make pins from something like Toxic Glow Shadetree / equivalent? Do those materials have a half life? (including the glowing carbon fiber)

I would imagine not, most of that stuff is photoluminescent, giving off light for a period of time after being exposed to light. Tritium is radioactive and gives off light as it decays. After about 12 years, it's decayed to the point where the light is too dim to be usable.

Wow what a cool thing to see your initial forge work. And those blades we'll be seeing on fiddleback outpost are already tempting me but I'm holding fast and will wait until your batch is finished and posted!

Thanks Douglas, I am excited to get back into forging it is something I have missed since I let it fall by the waist side over a year ago. I found one of my old forgings I started awhile back and never finished. I am confident I could do a better job if I did it over again today!

The fullers are cool and all, plus thank you for the info, but my interest is really peaked with the forging. I'll be following that progress closely.

That is a superb batch heading the the FB Outpost

Thanks Danny, and your welcome! I am excited to have you along for the ride! I will keep you guys posted on my progress.

The Carbon Fiber in its current state only glows on the sides, bit as I contour into the handle the glow layers will come through kind of like the Multi colored G10.

I agree with you and Abe as well. I quit once before for 6 years, but unfortunately picked it back up a few years ago. I will again but only when I am ready.

You, make an excellent point. I wouldn't want to put something on or in a knife that would degrade like that. I imagine if you got some glow material it could be turned with a lathe, but that's beyond my experience at the moment.

Your are correct they are photoluminescent as well as the Carbon Fiber I just obtained, the Carbon Fiber appears to have a more sensitive and brilliant photoluminescence to it. Keep you eyes peeled this week I plan on using at least one of them on this batch.
