Welcome first timers to the FAQ thread! Look for your answer here concerning Schrade Steels, Model numbers, Datelines, History. Please, even if you find the information you are looking for in this thread, do make a post to say hi, and don't hesitate to ask for a clarification.

The best thread I could find concerning this subject. Please note the qualifications of some of the posters quoted:

Debbie Chase was the Schrade company historian.
Tim Faust was the official Moderator of this forum and an employee of Schrade.
SchradeWebGuy was also an employee of Schrade, right until the bitter end.

Note: 440 steel gets denigrated a lot here on the forums. Some of it is outright steel snob-ery. Here's a recent quote by Bernard Levine that I totally agree with:

"You are misinformed about steels. 440a or 440c, when correctly heat treated and chill quenched, is an excellent blade steel. I have several kitchen knives with 440a blades, which I use often, that were sharpened for me by a cutler who died in 1974, and they are still as sharp as a knife can be.

BRL..."

I noticed in that link that Tim Faust referred to two older models of Uncle Henry and 171UH, and 172UH. Those are two numbers that I did not have on the list of Schrade model numbers. If anyone has information (name, size, etc.) on those models could you please post it? I am trying to update the list so that I can post it on this new sticky. Thanks for your help.

Merry Christmas,
Dale

Dale,
This list, posted by Larry, is ideal for the FAQ thread, and it shows all the UH and OT models issued by Schrade. (Courtesy of the Robert Clemente book).

834UH Rancher
877UH Pro Skinner
885UH Senior Rancher
897UH Signature Premium

Both of these fixed blades are desirable knives, holding thier value well and appreciating. The 171UH is the 'Big Pro Hunter'. Massive staglon handle, big, beefy blade. The earliest models had a 'birds head' type pommel, later ones had a screwed on brass pommel. Was cataloged twice, 1971-83 and then again 1990-91. My own, still NIB, is marked Schrade-Walden. I have a user grade one with no sheath... I gotta get Sheathmaker to take care of that for me.

The 172UH is the 'Wildcat'. Really a nice knife, expect to pay about $100 if you can find one NIB. This one was also run twice by Schrade, 1971-73 and 1990-91. Very limited production as you can imagine.

Here are a couple of pics so you know what to look for:
first pic is 172UH, second is 171UH early model, third pic is later 171UH.

Please, anyone... did I leave anything out?
Phil

Hello. I just registered and this is my first post, so if I act up you'll know why.

I appreciate the list above. I am new to Schrade collecting. I have a few, but I'm a real novice.

I didn't see the 896K listed. It is the same pattern as the 897 but with brown/cream handles.

JM

The "K" handled knives preceeded the UH line as an "open stock" Schrade offering. In many of the OT and UH designs, ancestors will be found in the open stock. The "K" handled kives were listed as early as the mid fifties for sure, while the "OT" line did not appear until 1958 at the earliest. The UH line appeared in 1967 with the intro of the staglon handled 897UH.

An interesting sidenote, the earliest Old Timers (58OT, 2OT) were not Schrade-Waldens, but Ulsters!

Phil,
I noticed duplication of a couple numbers in the list you just posted:
152UH Wolverine
154UH Badger
162UH Woverine
164UH Badger

Were these knives manufactured with both numbers? The numbers I had were 162 & 164. Please let me know and I will post the updated list on the new sticky. I am amazed the number of patterns I have added since I first compiled the list and posted it about a month ago. I am SURE the new list is not complete either, just a bit closer.

Thanks to everyone who has helped me with new patterns and descriptions, Phil, Larry and others who have posted info about patterns that were not on the list.

Dale

PS- a special thanks to LT for some very informative Schrade advertising/promotional sheets.

The numbers and names are correct. They just recycled some of the names.

Codger

Thanks Mike, I didn't know that.
The more I learn about Schrade the less I "know." :D

I got some great info from LT and as soon as I edit the list with LT's info I will post it here.

Dale

Here is the list of the more recent Schrade and Uncle Henry model numbers, with what information I have on them. The credit for this goes to a lot of people who posted information on this forum and people who have answered my questions, and emails; people like Larry, Phil, Mike and others. A special thanks to LT for some Schrade promotional flyers that had some patterns that I was only vaguely aware of and some I had not seen.
The more info I get, the less it is cut and dried, as Mike has often indicated.
This is not the definitive Schrade list, merely a starting point. If anyone has more info on a model, like dimensions, dates of production, etc., please feel free to email me so I can update this list. My email address is: orvet@comcast.net

Happy Schrade collecting, and if you get the disease.......well then, enjoy your Schradeitus! :D :D :D :D :D :D

Thanks for the numbers Mike. I knew there would be more to add!! :D
I would guess that OTO is Old Timer Orange and OTG is Old Timer Green, but I do not know what the S and L letters stand for. Please enlighten me.
Also I am unfamiliar with the 19OT, 491, 497, 199 & 512OT patterns. Is it possible to get a description for some of us newer collectors, myself included?

Thanks again Mike,
Dale

The '49ers series has it's own thread, courtesy of LT. Updated versions of the "100" series produced in the '60's, they were the "49er Benchmade Series" commemorating the gold rush. They were made with two different handle materials, "L" was for leather, and "S" for staglon.

As far as we have been able to determine, these knives listed in the last catalogs were never produced. Perhaps photo examples exist, but they never made production.

So the question I have is... Are you including special editions, limited editions, SFO's, Scrimshaw editions, etc. in the list? Those add more than a few hundred numbers and names.

Good Morning all
This is my first ever forum and Yes I was bitten by the Schrade bug. Seems you don't appreciate something till it's gone. Anyways, Can some one tell me about the 152OT, like cost of it before Schrade closed it's doors. and some of the differant packages they came in. I am particulary interested in the Carbon steel ones. Help as I am truly a novice. If you wish you may respond to my email address. I may not be able to find my way back here. Ha Ha David.Leadbeater@navy.mil

Bound to be some confusion, now and in the future. What is real, Made by the Schrade we know and love, and what is post-2004 production, either USA or China made.

What's the real Schrade here... and what has-- on the packaging in very small letters-- "Licensed by Taylor Cutlery"? Quick now, the top one is on Ebay as a 'Buy it Now' at a bargain price, and it's time for you to get to work... You have only moments to let this great old knife, in the original plastic tube get away from you or to buy it and own a treasure... What to do, what to do?

I'm not slamming the sellers, not slamming the knives. I could care less about the quality of the post-2004 pretenders; but as a member of this forum, as a Schrade collector, I merely want to know what has lasting (and increasing) value as a collectible piece and will enhance my collection.

Here are some threads to help tell the old Schrades from the new:
