I use the checkering file also, but it works best for straight surfaces. What about if you want to file a curved surface? The checkering file is going to file deeper in some spots than others. Also, those checkering files are expensive. About $30 or so.
Has anyone tried those air filers??? I saw one on sale and almost bought it but I'm not sure if it would work well on decoative carving.

Buzzards gotta eat, same as worms!!!
For me checkering files is the way to go. For round surfaces they come in a version with only 2 teeths. It is slow but rewarding using the smaller one.
