    The Just Hanging Out Thread.

@Coyja I have come more or less full circle but still like both moderns and traditionals. But I seem to buy more traditionals overall for the last couple of years. GEC.... yeah, I like their knives overall. But I am not going to go to great lengths to get my hands on a new release. If It is...

Esee Expat cleaver as a compact machet/chopper?

Years ago I was part of a survey crew and bought what I called a pineapple knife that looked much like the one you're looking at except for the handle was a simpler design. It cut. But it was too short as the briars and so forth did a number on my hands. So, my sense of the subject knife is...

Why might top makers hold onto old steels?

Stuff like S30 or S35V...... I am real fond of 1095, but I don't consider it middle range.

Why might top makers hold onto old steels?

Ultimately if the steel is a reasonable choice and the maker/manufacturer knows how to get what they want out of it, it doesn't matter. It doesn't bother me to sharpen I knife but I don't like to re-sharpen a knife in the middle of a job. Hence, the second knife. I'm influenced by the super...

How important is a pointy tip?

Don't believe you can get that on a modern knife. ;)

    Boat anchors/sharpened pry bars

If I know I will be chopping, I take along a Condor Village Parang or Pack Golok. I still have my BK-2. Don't care for it. Never used it beyond cutting paper in the house as I just knew I wouldn't like it much in the woods. Like the BK-7 better but it is a bit larger than I like to carry in...

How important is a pointy tip?

Pointy tip.... hmmm. I just started to carry the Rough Ryder Reserve Kayak model with my Small Tinker which does not have a real pointy tip. The tip is part of the reason I chose to carry the RRR. I also want to try one out. It is new. In general, I want a pointy tip with a knife for just...

    Recommendation? General purpose fixed blade

Here is one of my woods stomping combo's. The Bark River is the Wilderness Explorer (WE) with a 5.75" blade in Cruwear, and the orange handled one is the White River Backpacker Pro (S35VN). The Backpacker Pro is a small knife but would stand up to significant batoning if needed. I often leave...

SAKs & Other Knives - Carried Together

Started carrying the Rough Ryder Reserve Kayak (RRR002) this week with my regular SAK. I also carry the little Arno Bernard Squirrel or the Condor Mini Kephart on my belt at times with it.

    Recommendation? General purpose fixed blade

I think this would be a good general purpose choice. The "shelter building" is what has me a little stumped relative to the blade size you mentioned. I'd carry a small folding saw as part of your kit. The Becker BK-62 Kephart is a good choice but it is not a knife to do a lot of heavy batonning.

Why does Victorinox play hard to get with the perfect SAK?

I actually did a couple years ago but Vic would not allow changing the various tools. It was a Spartan and it is my only Spartan. It was free too. :D The cork screw is generally why I don't favor the Spartan.

Do you use your GEC knives?

I understand the devaluing aspect. But in general you're talking about nickels and dimes relative to living. Sure if you had a 100 older GEC's and sold them, you might be able to make a rent or house payment or perhaps two. But that is a lot of effort. My tendency is to not use most of them...

    Whatcha got on order ?

Glad you finally got the jacket. I tend to order one size larger than what I need on jackets and coats. I like things like that a little loose. It also allows for another layer if needed. On my leather jackets, I have never used a liner. I would rather just add a layer. But winters here...

Rough Ryder Reserve: New Premium Rough Ryder Line

I haven't tried to look at an episode yet, but it appears to be "free".

Rough Ryder Reserve: New Premium Rough Ryder Line

The RRR Kayak is my very first canoe pattern traditional. I think you'll like it. Those daily emails from them do create sales. Let us know what you think as the RRR is really still in its infancy in terms of the market. I normally just delete the daily advertising emails without looking...

Rough Ryder Reserve: New Premium Rough Ryder Line

There apparently is a new Star Trek series on CBS coming up. Don't know if it is only streaming or on regular channels.

Rough Ryder Reserve: New Premium Rough Ryder Line

Yep. That is the dominant reason I have one... it doesn't get used much. I'm looking forward to a Trapper pattern and perhaps something smallish... Peanut or slightly larger. I like the concept of the Rough Ryder Reserve.... never repeat the same exact knife and so forth. They definitely...

    Do you keep SAK spares?

I still think the Classic is a "bit of a joke" for a real knife. It is sort of a pen knife+. I am sure it would do just fine for cutting open a package or store packaging... and so forth (little jobs). It is the flimsy nature of the blade and pivot that gets me. I can handle a peanut as a...

    Do you keep SAK spares?

This happens. Happened with my old favorite side locking Adventurer model. It was re-introduced with a liner lock a year or so later. The problem is knowing one is discontinued. They don't exactly announce such things. What if you misplace that S18? Nice to have another around for a day...

    Do you keep SAK spares?

I used to stash knives "around the house", but find it a waste for the most part. I do keep a couple knives in my pickup beyond what I carry normally. My spares are available for use (no mental restrictions), but for the most part they are unused until needed. If I misplace my usual SAK for a...
