    Using Aluminum

    OK, nevermind:oops:

    Using Aluminum

Durability and looks. Aluminum doesn't stay shiny, oxidizes (I think) to a dull grey and will scratch easy.

    widening a billet with press?

That's the safer, but slower way. You'll probably quickly get to the point where you do multiple passes with the drawing fuller before switching to the flat dies. As you get more motor control you'd be able make those fullers narrower to work faster, but I bet the difference would be minimal...

    widening a billet with press?

Not sure why this is, but perhaps because we're making the bar from individual pieces, it'd be as easy to just start with wider stock and make a wider billet? Any forging will distort the pattern (unless you are the perfect blacksmith, I guess), especially when widening a billet...\ I'm...

    widening a billet with press?

Another option would be a top tool and flat dies. A quick and dirty option would be a 1"+ round bar with a slight s-bend

    widening a billet with press?

another set of dies so you can use your press like the cross peen. just make sure the ends are rounded with a large radius so you can work up and down the length of the billet without adding cold shuts.

    Blade Show west in California

All the comments about crime statistics being the reason not to attend reminds me of a disagreement I had with my Father ~ 40 years ago when growing up in the suburbs of Chicago. One summer day-off I wanted to take the train to Oak St Beach with a couple of friends to spend time with my older...

    A couple more canister questions

Good morning all. It seems as if this is canister season. I've been reading in other posts how small amounts of what I would have called 'contaminants' don't seem to be that much of an issue, because they burn up and use any oxygen that might be left in the can. I'm trying to mimic a starry...

    Bevel grinding jigs

Whoa, big fella....easy there. Unfortunately, you went off the rails when you included this example. Every knife gets heat treated pretty much the same way so including this doesn't help your argument....

I hear you! Revisit this thought in a few months when you get comfortable with the press and start forging out 3 stacks each time you light up the forge.;)

    Mini Diktator

Or (e) is it that nobody really believes what someone else has to say and the desire to save a few $ is the ultimate decider?

Probably not needed, but with a handle, you can just forge the whole can in one go, without a handle you have to stop when you get to the tongs and turn it around.

I'm hoping the same thing with the chessboard I'm making. I wonder if you took the piece I almost bought last time I was there...it's probably got my fingerprints on it somewhere....
