New Chris Reeve finish on titanium handles and standard blades

They released a new version of the Mnandi at the beginning of the year. The biggest change is the thumb groove is now an actual hole, so 1- or 2-handed opening are both easy. Blade steel was changed to S45VN. Instead of the full polish, the flats are now "ultra-fine" bead blasted and the...

Does anyone make a custom scale for the CRKT Pilar 3?

It's only been out a few months, but I'd expect Flytanium to have something at some point.

    ProTech SBR missing serial number

I believe only the first production and later limited-run versions have serial numbers, and standard models after the initial run are un-numbered

How tough is 420hc compared to other steels?

These are @Larrin's toughness charts. 420HC is pretty tough, albeit at a pretty low HRC (and thus lower edge retention) relative to most of the others.

"Experts" demand premium blade steels until it comes to prime collectors knives from companies like Loveless and Randall?

In a vacuum, no, the Fiero isn't that bad. But it's still a terrible Ferrari. A Honda motor would help keep the pistons from falling out, though.

I was just told a skeletonized tang has more strength. Is that true?

The only situation I've heard of where removing metal can make it "stronger" is dimple die holes in sheet metal, which can greatly improve rigidity.

New Chris Reeve finish on titanium handles and standard blades

So they changed to a finish that's cheaper for them to produce... that kinda sucks. I do like the "two-tone" finish they use on the new version of the Mnandi (the one with the thumb hole), though. I guess this is the solution they've landed on to get their production moving faster.

    CRKT Pilar 3 D2

Retail on the CF/S35VN Pilar from BHQ was $70, which was a steal. If they do a "high-end" Pilar 3, I'd expect it to come in a little more than the S35VN Elementum, around $85-95.

    Critical of factory grinds

I haven't had any issues with bad primary grinds on any of my knives, but the last several Golden-made Spydercos I've received have had asymmetrical edges. Oddly, they were pretty consistent in how they were off: 17ish on one side and 20ish on the other.

"Experts" demand premium blade steels until it comes to prime collectors knives from companies like Loveless and Randall?

The mistake Loveless and Randall made was to disclose what steel they use. If they'd just gone the Busse route of giving their steel of choice an ambiguous name and hyping it up to mythical proportions, nobody would be able to say they were using a "subpar" steel.

Recommendation? Evaluation of a Remington bullet knife. Reproduction?

According to this site, http://www.commemorativearms.com/remingtonreproductionbulletknives2.htm, the 1982 reproduction used stainless blades, where the original run used carbon. Your knife has basically no patina at all, which makes me very skeptical that it's an 80-100 year old carbon steel...

So the line between old school and modern is somewhere between the early 1960s and 1999. Good to know.
