4" kwaiken in CPM-Magnacut and Koa

I haven't made too many of these of late. Really, the only time I decide to bust one out is when I'm struggling with a detail on another project. The 'muscle memory' of this profile is strong enough that I don't really need to think much about it when I'm making one, and this can help me keep...

CPM MagnaCut – The Next Breakthrough in Knife Steel

It grinds easier than almost every other stainless steel I’ve worked with. Heat treat doesn’t require any further steps or unusual requirements.

    200mm Gyuto in CPM-Magnacut

Just realized that I can add the details on the new steel to these previously-cryptic threads. :D CPM MagnaCut is the new alloy, created and designed by @Larrin , made by Crucible Steel, and rolled and distributed by @nsm The Knifesteelnerds page on it is here.

CPM MagnaCut – The Next Breakthrough in Knife Steel

Thanks for the update on availability - most people don’t have much grasp of what it takes to produce something like this from raw materials to finished product, much less develop and test it, and the fact that the small initial melt was a success right out of the gates is almost unheard of. I...

From Billet to Sheet - Crucible CPM-S35vn hot rolling at Niagara Specialty Metals

Bringing this back up so that I can link it to a thread in General. The new forum software won't allow me to fix the video link in the first post of this thread, because there's more than 20 photos in it, and that's against the rules  So, here it is again:

    Jody Samson

Jody's work and style was - and continues to be - an enormous influence on me. His knives are some of my greatest inspirations. A few I've made I've even named for him, as the grind is his 'weehawk tanto' grind: "Samson Bowies" @Dawkind was gracious enough to allow me to complete an...

    Dave Larsen (DDaveLarsen) has passed

I’m dreadfully sorry to hear this. He was a long-time contributor to Shop Talk, back when it was something worth talking about, and he was part of the reason for that. My condolences to you and your family. Sad news, for certain, and the knifemaking community is less for it.

Dudley nailed it. Not often used in knives, as it has next to no wear resistance, but it is TOUGH. Crazy tough. Think 'jackhammer bit' or 'forklift tine' tough, as that's among its uses, aside from industrial shearing blades.
