    Reworked chopper... RD9 "Bowie"

When you already doing bowie out of it, why not to grind the handle down to more traditionall shape, move it higher as to get rid off the choi, put there a crossguard and riveted handle slabs in more traditional shape? I think there is pretty mountain man bowie in it, and it doesnt need much...

    Boots again

I actually had "civilian" version of similar molded boots which I suppose was at the time exported to south america, the lather was quality though and they were also lined inside with leather. I have worn them for 7 years except for summers as my normal shoes and they even kept original laces...

    Boots again

Sorry to drag this old thema again up, particulary when I already asked once in the past. I would like to ask (particulary british) folks who go here and have the experience, what do they think about british "assault" boots. Its army footwear, OK, but they seem to be fully leather lined inside...

    Rock crystal lenses for fire

Hi folks, I m into living history. I have looked over some of the viking burning lenses, aparently quite advanced - though empirically. I would like to have a replica for starting fire. Im looking for a piece of rock crystal or quartz to make one. Did anybody of you made something like...

    Thanks those who adviced me

Thanks all. The grinding think is drum mounted on the drillpress. I did some hand sanding after I finished on the machine, but its just too big. The wheel has tendency to dig in if you are not carefull, unlike the belt sander with platten. If I had a sen I could make better surfaces than this by...

    Thanks those who adviced me

Thanks for advices on S1 steel. This is what came out of it. Its 49 cm long and 8 mm thick at spine with some distall tapper. Flat/convex grind, but I did it on this wheel: (Without decent equipment.) First cutting with unsharpened (ground) blade Now I got to put some...

    Another steel ID

Aha. I dug around and it seems to have been tool version of local 5160 steel, but it has tighter legure tollerances. I was told that blades for high speed skating (the skates) were made from this stuff. Those are only like 3 mm thick. I got to try it. Jaro

    Another steel ID

5160 has like 0-15 -0.35 Si and this stuff has 1.5-1.9 percent of Si. But it looks to be 5160 based. Jaro

    Retempering D2

O.K. I have this chunk of industrial D2 blade, probably from kind of machine cutting plastic or something. It has sabre ground and it seems to be hardened to be very hard as it eventually chips. It has some lenght and I might easy be capable to regrind it into knife (something leukish comes...

    Stainless for a sword

I guess that more modern steel like RWL 34 can do it, as they are plenty tough for the job and flexible too. To many swords made even in carbon steels which are hunking thick heavy and rigid even i they shall not be. But off course price tag on such piece of this materiall is pretty fine. Jaro
