Hey folks were can I find 1/8 thick 410ss.I looked in all my books dont see it.
Going to try it for folder bolsters if I can find it. Thanks in advance !

410 ?? The free machining grade 416 is often used for bolsters and should be easier to find at knife part suppliers.Should be easier to find than 1/8" 410.

From what I understand there are several folder makers that are using it now including the likes of Bose. I was told it solders very well and it works
better then Nickel Silver . The .040 is easy to find but the 1/8 410ss I have not been able to locate yet. Sure hope somebody has a source for it .

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the info. even though it wasn't me who asked the question.....
Got a couple of questions (OK 3) also:

Can anyone tell the color or appearance difference between 416 and 410...say I use 416 pin material and 410 for bolsters and liners?....I can't tell but that is just me and the pins need to "disappear" after peening and finishing.

Will 416 (bolster material) solder to 410 liners as well as 410 to 410?

Does anyone have a source for 410 pin material in 1/16" and 3/32" diameter?
I have tried to Google and not found it those or wire sizes that might be similar.

Thank-you!

I haven't tried putting the 2 together but I would guess that the difference would show. I found this chart:

400 Series—ferritic and martensitic chromium alloys
Type 408—heat-resistant; poor corrosion resistance; 11% chromium, 8% nickel.
Type 409—cheapest type; used for automobile exhausts; ferritic (iron/chromium only).
Type 410—martensitic (high-strength iron/chromium). Wear resistant, but less corrosion resistant.
Type 416— easy to machine due to additional sulfur
Type 420—"Cutlery Grade" martensitic; similar to the Brearley's original "rustless steel". Also known as "surgical steel". Excellent polishability.
Type 430—decorative, e.g., for automotive trim; ferritic. Good formability, but with reduced temperature and corrosion resistance.
Type 440—a higher grade of cutlery steel, with more carbon in it, which allows for much better edge retention when the steel is heat treated properly. It can be hardened to Rockwell 58 hardness, making it one of the hardest stainless steels. Due to its toughness and relatively low cost, most display-only and replica swords or knives are made of 440 stainless. Also known as "razor blade steel". Available in four grades 440A, 440B, 440C (more common) and 440F (free machinable).
500 Series—heat resisting chromium alloys
600 Series—martensitic precipitation hardening alloys
Type 630—most common PH stainless, better known as 17-4; 17% chromium, 4% nickel

There would be no color difference but when mirror polished you might see a difference in texture due to the sulfides in the 416.

I'm told that K&G carries the 410 pin stock, even though it isn't listed on their website. Also, the 410 sheet stock from "Slices" comes clean and flat, ready to use whereas you may have to work a little harder to get the 416 flat. It has something to do with the difference in the process or way the two types of SS are made.

Gentlemen,
Thank-you so much!
Mete, normally I will take the the bolsters to mirror, then use 1000 grit or 1500 grit to lightly "hand-rub" the bolsters, then lightly polish so it has a lusterous finish but isn't mirrored. Makes it hand rubbed but like a coat of simonize wax puts a deep shine on a car finish....Eugene Shadley does a finish on his bolsters as well as anyone I've met to achieve the look I tried to describe......

Kerry,
K&G has the sheet stock in 410 in both 0.032" and 0.040.
They don't have the pin stock in 410. The lady went to Ken (McFall) and asked. Darn!

Dang! I can't keep up! Fitzo swooped in and saved the day though  :D

BTW, MSC ROCKS as a company and when you work on your car, you can use their catalog as a jack stand:D

I use 416 pins through 410 bolsters with no problems, I can't see them in there. I also have had no problems soldering 416 t0 410. It's basicly the same stuff. I think 410 makes a better bolster because it comes harder and finishes so nice. It is also pretty flat and doesn't need ground, just wipe it on a surface plate.

Thanks also to Tony and to Mike.

Mike, I'm real glad that 410 is a new item in the BigBook.....I scoured last year's and the online, and would take an oath they didn't have it in precision ground or otherwise last year.....

I did just order some from Slice of Stainless...by phone...call me old fashioned..I can hopefully tell more about someone talking with them so like to call the first time doing business with someone.
I bought more than I should have and I asked them to cut in smaller pieces..
It's 4:45 pm, 5-3-07 and they will cut it and still ship tomorrow.....That is service!

Tony, Thank you for your help I have plenty of 416 pin material and will practice up my soldering skills....
If I may ask one more question, do you solder all your bolsters to sheet, even
double bolstered knives....or do you sometimes mill the double bolstered liner/bolster combination from a thicker piece of 410 or 416?

Thank-you,

I have always soldered bolsters on, The secret is to get everything flat and straight then tin the bolsters and liners. Kerry done a thread on how I do it, maybe he could put up a link.
