#105 Pathfinder New vs Old?

I want to add a #105 to the collection, to replace the one I 'gifted' to a good friend in Alaska. Just acquired an older flap-over type sheath in new cond., and it needs to be filled! I'd like to find an older one (70's to 80's mfg.) in new cond., but if I can't find one, are the current models still made with the same quality that I long ago came to expect from Buck?

IMO, Buck quality is still the same. The only real difference is blade material. Pre-1981 = 440C. Current model = 420HC. The grind lines on the new model are a little more defined as well. Great knife. My favorite fixed blade.

Newer ones might even be a little better than the old ones but, that being said sometimes the older models had slightly different profiles to the blade or handle or things like bone or micarta spaces that have changed to different materials on the new ones. I'd suggest you try to check out a new one in person and see what you think then look around for an older model and see if there are noticeable differences that you like or dislike and go from there. I don't believe you will be disappointed which ever direction you decide to go.

I've cleaned deer with both blade grinds (and the different steels) - if the blade is sharp then the skinning, cutting, and slicing are the same - quality equal. On the new 105 Pathfinders I like the esthetics of the current ones - just a little bit straighter. OH

Thanks, I appreciate the info. There is something special to me about my older Bucks, guess it's no different than the attraction many of us have for older guns, cars or trucks, etc.
If anyone has an older #105 Pathfinder in really good cond., that they'd be willing to part with, please send a PM my way. (moderator: I hope this is acceptable, if not, please delete with my apologies.)

Thank you.
Jeff

Not for sale but here's a little something to tide you over on your hunt. This is a beautiful 105 from 1967-68 that I won on the BCCI Youth Auction three years ago. My one and only #105 and I love it! I have been advised by a knowledgeable member that my 105 is from the mid 69 to mid 1972. The 67-68 date range was what was listed on the BCCI site when the blade was auctioned.

Love the micarta spacers, (don't think they are bone) and she is lazer beam sharp.

If we are going to post photo's! On top, a Buck 105 bought in the PX at Fort Hood TX in 1972, bottom is a Buck 105 bought in the PX at Aberdeen Proving Ground MD in 1976. Neither for sale. OH

Looks like I've found one (or, did it find me?), thanks to the kindness of forum member Pack Rat.
Thanks so much. :)
