Chris, nice activity there on the blade - good work! Glad to see you churning out more blades.....shobu zukuris on wakis are really nice, hira zukuris are great cutters tho!

Perhaps you could consider taking photos with a tungsten bulb as a source of lighting, they really help with the hamon.....

tungsten bulbs? hmmm i will see what i can do. i am going to hopefully forge some layered stuff.. and make one out of W2. and one will be a shobu zukuri.. one another hira.
any idea what causes the "crystal" look? i dont particularly like it.. and notie that it happens in 1095 too.. why is that?

thanks
~Chris

I'm not that knowledgeable about the different Japanese descriptive terms for different hamons and degrees of polish, but I'd love to see that in full polish to show that awesome hamon! Care to give a description of the making and heat treating? I'd love to hear.

Again, stunning work.

hey guys!
the blade waqs forged out of 1075/1080 bar stock i got from admiral steel. it was the last i forged before really reading up on the geometry of japanese blades. so this one is pretty much straight. to tell you the truth i almost set it aside and didnt finish it at all even though i had Heat treated it. i got the two DVDs from Walter Sorrells, and i was rather ashamed of it... but that is also why i am not going to fully mount it. i really want to try out my new found knowledge.

the blade was heat treated at about 1500 and quenched in Parks #50 oil. i used rutland black furnace cement for the clay, and the hamon is rather pretty, but very functional as well.. i took the balde out and was cutting downd little sapling up to about an inch in dia with one swipe.. so it is a very good cutter, and woould make a great practical use wakizashi (if there is such a thing).

the total lenght is 25" the balde is a little less than 1/4" thick and is convex ground for edge retention without sacrificing cutting.

thanks for looking.. if you hve any other questions, let me know

nice...hira zukuri is my favorite profile for a Japanese sword. this one looks good. are you taking custom orders?

hey!
thanks... i am not taking custom orders at the moment.. persay. but i am looking to make another hira zukuri out of W2. is that in your perameters? what are you looking at?
thanks so much!

something like it...but i wanted an Indo/Malay short sword...similar blade profile just different handle configuration-handle slightly points downward like a pistol grip.

Nice blade, I might be interested. From the look of the blade in the photos, I wonder why you would feel shame. It looks like a perfectly good blade that deserves an simple and elegant mounting. BTW, still happy with every knife that I've gotten from you.

Hi Chris,

Nice blade! Do you have an email address I can contact you at? I might be also interested in the W2 hirazukuri wakizashi as well..

*laughs*
well... i got the dvds from Walter Sorrells, and he pointed out that a blade should be a smooth taper.. while this one is a little less than 1/4" thick almost all the way to the tip. i am going to be making the habaki for it possibly tommorow. it and a little W2 hira zukuri tanto.
i am glad that you are happy with my knives! i am very happy bout that indeed. if you and intrested (or if not,) would you recomend a spesific style of habaki?
thanks!
~chris

hey!
sorry larry, i didnt see your post before i posted. my email address is Knifemaker87@gmail.com

i am also working on some folded layered cable damascus for a sword. but that will prolly be a shobuzukuri
thanks!
~Chris

Chris 1. That is awesome! Nice hamon
2. your habakis are better than you think! the other sword you made had an awesome one. keep up the good work!

Chris,
No particular type of hibiki in mind. A micarta tsuba might look good on this blade with cord wrapped micarta handle.
