Hi, I want to buy a small fixed blade and I hesitate between a becker necker (bk11) or a Schrade Schf14!

I'm mostly concerned about edge retention.

What do you guys think?

bk11 will perform better but is not stainless. 8Cr13MoV is not the greatest steel but can be decent. I am not a fan of much new stuff from Schrade. I would recommend the bk11 by far, as will most others here I suspect.

I would probably go with the 1095 (bk11). I prefer stainless, but 8cr is not that stainless anyway. 1095 is a good steel. Kabar should have a good warranty. They would both be easy to sharpen.

I would go with 1095 steel at that point. 8Cr13Mov is a good steel on a budget. But it's not that great at holding an edge. But at least you can sharpen it up fast If you need to since it is a soft steel.

8Cr13MOV holds it's edge about as much as the edge of a wet sheet of paper.
And it rusts extremely easy. Moisture in the air caused rust spots on my Tenacious. It never even got wet.
YMMV, but I have had atrocious experiences with it.
I avoid it like my life depends on it.

1095 is better STEEL, but it WILL need more maintenance.

I personally haven't seen a corrosion issue with any of the 8CR13MOV knives that I have. And I have over 20 Sanrenmu/Land/Bee/Navy/Ganzo knives as well as the entire Tenacious family, and about a dozen Byrd knives, which all use 8CR13MOV. It mostly boils down to how you maintain them.

I didn't even notice that! Well, I hope he went with 1095!:p
