Reading through another thread about the Buck 110 has got me looking at the custom shop and considering my options.

I’m curious, for the Buck-converted of BF, what’re your thoughts on the newer drop point variant of the blade? I know the history of the clip point and the fact it’s a classic, and as far as looks go I’m not sure which I prefer.

Just wading into the Buck pond here and would love to hear input from anyone who’s got some. Cheers!

Clip can be steered more then the drop point.

Take a clip point and try to cut a small 3-4inch circle in some cardboard. Then try the same with a drop point. The absence of a thick spine, allows the clip point to take a corner more easily. The thicker spine on the drop point doesn't allow as fine of movement as the clip.

Benefit of the drop point. The heavier spine is carried farther out to the tip. Giving a more robust blade. As with a bushcraft style knife.

Benefit of clip point. Easier to maneuver in curve cuts.

What you really want to decide is which 110 you will buy first. I suggest the 110 clip point, ebony covers...your basic, iconic Buck 110 and then go from there...

I should emphasize what pjsjr pjsjr said.... "... which 110 you will buy FIRST" lol

I think they're both equally useful and versatile. And as far as their intended purpose, either will work equally well. I use a drop point as my go to hunting 110, but only because it is S90V. If it was a clip point in the same steel, I would be just as happy with it. I used a 560 in the standard steel clip point, then an S30V clip point, and the drop point S90V for the last few years.

That being said, I almost always prefer the clip point. Not because it's how it was intended or originally designed, but because it's the most versatile. I don't use it for prying or turning screws so I have little concern about breaking it.

I say go all in on a clip point in S30V with whatever handle you want from the custom shop. That'll give you the best opportunity to love it.

You don't want one... They're outdated. 🤣 For me the decision was based more on aesthetics, I prefer the look of the clip point, so that's what have. Of course my only example currently in an LT. So it's not like there was a choice.

It's an awesome knife though.

I prefer clip point knives so of course I’m biased. I try not to pry with a knife, but if it’s unavoidable I don’t use the tip. I prefer the aesthetics and broader uses of the clip point knife. The 110 isn’t a dedicated weapon or bushcraft knife but in its standard iteration, it’s sturdy and tough enough that I trust it on a boat or in the mountains if it’s the only (and often it is) knife I have on me. My $.02

The drop point doesn’t look like a 110. Every time I think about buying one I think ”Nope. It is an abomination”.

Then I remember all the snapped off clip points I’ve seen through the years…. Then I look at it again and go back to my original thought.

Get the one you like. You’ll always be the best judge of what’s right for you.

If I may, buy an automatic 110 instead. By far, my favorite variant. Very comfortable for large hands like ours.

I have both clip and drop points. I use the clip more often for general purpose probably 75% of the time. The drop point is good out camping/ hunting and around the yard and garden. As far as looks go I like both of them and sometimes think it would be nice if there were a two blade 110 but that would probably be a a monster weighing as much as as 124.

I guess if there was only the clip point I could do just as well without the choice but it is nice to have a choice.
