I've recently been intoduced to the 22/410. Sounds like a great gun for my needs. Anyone here have any useful information on them? Thanks

Nothing too helpful to offer, but it brings back memories of fun shooting a while back. Drawing a blank, but I think it was an H&R brake action that a buddy had that I used now and then. Should be a practical plinker/pest gun. The .22 should get the bulk of use, but I always thought of the .410 as real handy to have around.

Been bugging me, I think that little combo rifle was a savage. Take care, Craig

very decent for small game..the 410 is a decent shotgun but has a very tiny shot charge and is more frequently known as a game wounder than a game killer. that being said it should be fine for squirrels and bunnies inside of 60 feet with size 6 shot or higher and with slugs or buck shot is not bad as a defensive weapon in close range...Rossi makes a firearms with an interchangeable .22 and .410 barrels. but they also make one that has interchangeable .22 and 20 gauge barrels a 20 gauge is to a .410 what chees is to a burger it just makes everythin better alot more shot per shell alot more forgiving on moving targets and alot cheaper and easily accessable ammo. Good luck in your search (also I've never owned the rossi Matched pair) they are really inexpensive which makes me question the quality but alot of people seem to thnk pretty highly of them.

Hey, I got my son one of the switch barrel models for christmas a couple years ago. With a scope the 22 is alot more accurate than I anticipated considering the low price... I'm thinking maybe around $130-150 but I could be off. I forget prices after a couple years. Mostly we use the .410 on poisonous snakes and peppering the backsides of dogs that try for my chickens. long shots with bird shot (You send one dog off squalling and I promise you it won't return.) Fun gun. the 22 shoots more tin cans and targets than game. being a single shot I wouldn't think it would be the best for personal protection. For years I've had this great idea that they need to make a small sized pump 410 in all matte stainless. I think it would be perfect for home protection. Being a single shot it really helps in the learning to shoot stage, slows people down so you concentrate on proper technique rather than trying to get a bullseye based on probability. (50 shots; one has got to be a bullseye.) Also it's not real intimidating to a woman, good first shooting experience for a lady. My wife was hooked... up until I pulled out my .44 mag. oh well live and learn. later Ron

Basically, it's a useless gun. If you want a .22 get a semi-auto that holds a lot of rounds. If you want a shotgun get at least a 20 gauge.

I would be hesitant to go bunny hunting with a .410. I would probably go with a 20 or 12 (maybe 16 would work to)- those things can dart through briars like no tomorrow.

I have heard reliable reports of 40 yard kills on grey squirrels with 3" 6 shot out of a full choke 870. I have made shots to 25/30 yards that are kills with mine.

Actually, for a begining shooter, a semi auto is bad news. Having only 1 shot potential, sticks 'em with a burning desire to put that bullet where they want.

as a guy who grew up carting an old savage model 24 22 410 over and under, I will tell you that it will kill almost anything you want to hunt with it. snowshoes, rabbits, squirrels, a few skunks, and other things all fell to that .22 and more than a few grouse, and other game birds fell to it too.

It is not a gun for out hunting with dogs and snobby friends, but if you spend a lot of time alone wandering its a good gun. The .22 short is very quiet and will kill supper just fine if you get close and hold steady. In fact my is still on duty at my dad's house defending the bird feeders and the garden. Dad says he got two raccoon last night. One with a .22 between the eyes, and the other in the tree with a #4 shot of the .410.

My little brother's first gun was a Savage 22Mag/410 and everything that moved within 30 yards was a goner! That was a great little gun and having only one shot is perfect for a beginner shooter, makes you really think about that shot!

As far as the 410 being a worthless cartridge, I have a .410 break action that was my grandfather's first gun and that firearm has killed everything from mice to deer. You just have to be aware of the limitations and strengths. It's still my favorite gut to take out in the brush especially for squirrel and doves. Learned to hunt grouse with the .410 and even killed a couple of mallards with it myself. I've never fired slugs out of it, but my dad and grandfather both took deer with it.

My 11 year old son has started shooting it and can dust a clay pigeon out to 15 yards nearly every time.

Since it is useless, I'll gladly take it off your hands.

As for the .22/.410 thing. I much prefer a .22/20ga for a combo gun. I purchased my son a Rossi Matched Pair as a first gun. The workmanship reflects the price but it shoots where it is aimed and suits our needs. I too, like single shot/exposed hammer guns for teaching new shooters.

Someone mentioned .410 as a SD gun. The concept has been tried by Mossberg. It was a .410 pump with a vertical grip forend. HS410 was the model # I believe.

I handled on of the Mossberg .410's that your describing. They balance very well, as do most riot/ short barrel shotguns. I'm leary about the spreader choke that's on them, but for HD engagement distance, it should still work, especially with buckshot or slugs.

Mossberg also makes a pistol grip (no butt .410 model) that looks like a fun toy:cool:

I think the H&R Handi-Guns and Marble's Game Getters would be really sweet if there wasn't so much red tape around them due to the NFA.

Had a Savage .22/.410 over under when I was a kid, and it was a awesome gun for small game! My brother still has it! Great gun for your kids "first gun"!
