Recommendation? 26' Husqvarna all porpouse axe or 17' hultafors axe?

Hello all,

I am looking for a bushcraft axe that will also be used for general work around the house. It will be my first axe and I don't have a lot of knowledge (other than hours of reading and watching reviews) so I need some advice. I don't think that the size of the husqvarna will be a problem for packing, but I think I won't be able to carve with it.

Thanks in advance for your help,
Marius

a vintage boys axe would be cheaper and better quality in some cases but i understand if you're just trying to get an axe without much effort. the swedish axes have flat cheeks (side of the head) whereas the boys axes have round cheeks, they stick less. the hults and husqys are good, they're just not great

again, if you're just looking for an occasional use tool go with the husqy

I don't know anything about the two axes that you mentioned, but I have split and chopped a heck of a lot of wood and if it were me and I was just going to have one all purpose axe, I would want an axe and not a hatchet. I tried to look up the hultafors you mentioned but there were too many models on the website and I wasn't sure which one you were referring to, but in my mind 17" is a hatchet, where as 26" is an axe.

Its way easier to do small work with a big axe than big work with a small axe (within reason).

oh and just FYI, ' = feet, " = inches.

I don't know exactly what type of work you will be doing around the house. I recommend a large felleng axe for big jobs, and a camping axe for the small stuff. Plumb,Collins, Husq-, Norlund,True Temper, all make good products and are more affordable than Grans Fors or Autine. I use an old Sears Craftsman mainly for Grub work around my home place.

I have the 26” general sized husqvarna and the head is a little light for most of the work I would use an axe for. The handle is also a little too chunky for fine carving.
If you do plan on picking one up I would suggest picking one up in person from a local husqvarna dealer and pick the best of the lot.
I would also pick up a rasp and some sandpaper to thin out and refinish the handle with boiled linseed oil. After than it’s a decent axe, fine for limbing but a little thin at the bit and light to split kindling with.

Their hatchet and carpenters axe are both probably better suited to homeowner tasks that I need an axe for.
