Hey Everyone,

I am new to the forum and to knife making in general. I have done a few knife bevels with a file and I am looking to speed the process up a bit. I am wondering on what you guys opinions are on the best 2X48 belt grinder out there. This is something that will be useful in my shop not just for knife making so I think it is a good investment. I haven't been able to find anything that has adjustable belt speeds, but that I something I do want. I may have to add a VFD later, but that is ok. I do not have the money for a 2X72. Any opinions are greatly appreciated.

Welcome, My 2 cents is to hold off until you can get a 2 x 72” my first that I still own along with two others is a www.cootebeltgrinder.com. Norman also sells a 2x 48” for belts, Norton & 3M both have belts in both sizes.. trugrit.com in Ontario Ca,

What does a new 1 hp motor usually run? I haven’t looked into anything without a motor. Thank you

Also are these pulleys out there for this purpose that will allow for different RPMs? Similar to a drill press.

I couldn't find anything in the US that was similar to a "shrunken" down 2x72. I wasn't doing it to save money, I did it to save my limited space.

The one from ebay linked above looks nice although the listing says it can only be shipped to EU countries.

The other one that I found that looks nice is the one from Australia that Alec Steele also resells. But, if you have the space, you can get a 2x72 in the US for less cash.

I ended up making my frame and just buying the wheels from eBay. I'm fairly happy with it and have made a couple of changes since my thread including making a small wheel tool arm. I put a VFD on mine and the extra money was completely worth it.

With two active teenage kids and a full time job, my main issue is not having enough time to actually grind knives on it.

I really like the layout of the one your friend made in Greece. I would love if he could ship to the US. I did message Alec a month back about the one that he has, but unfortunately he doesn't have any more at the moment :/. I am also limited on space as I have half of the garage to worth with, I really need a shop!

I like that setup as well. Unfortunately they are sold out of US spec ones at the moment. I will keep checking in with them for sure though.

Yes on the pulleys, I ran my Coote 2x72 that way for years. I found used open motors for $50 or so and used them for years. Doesn’t have to be a TEFC motor to get you Grinding. Your Best selection & Buy per SQ inch is on 2x72” belts.
