Looking for recommendations for a good belt grinder for knife making, ideally a(2x72 belt grinder.

Key is being available in the UK, as not keen on import duty & long-ass shipping times!

Want something that'll last, really, as it's a big investment for me.

If you are not on Edge Matters, I would recommend that to you. You have to register to read, but it is free, and UK based, not a bad forum, albeit fairly small. You will certainly find people talking about UK source grinders, you may even find a grinder going second hand. Same goes for BushcraftUK, I have seen a few grinders posted for sale there. Where in the UK are you based?

The shipping cost from the US can be significant, and as I discovered, motors to fit US grinders can be hellish expensive compared to UK/EU motors.

Cool, thanks I'll join now!

Why 2x72 and not 50x2000 mm which is the european standard? Gfsknifesupplies.com sell Claryx grinders

In the metric world 50 X 2000mm is the standard.
Start your search from there.
I have a machine from Claryx and love it.
Quick and professional contact, build well and build to last.
Not cheap but cry once

Thanks everyone. I guess I've just heard more about 2x72 than I have 50x2000! Interesting point.

Okay, will consider all - thanks for advice folks :)

Thanks again to everyone that replied!

I looked around and in the end went with this one from multitool products - https://www.multitoolproducts.com/product-page/84-engineering-2x72-belt-grinders - Partly because it looked very solid, partly because they actually answered the phone & took the time to have a good chat with me about it, and partly because they could ship it right away and it only took a couple of days to get to me (some of the others were 2 weeks to 6 weeks and was worried I wouldn't get it in time for xmas, as need to make some gifts before then! Ha!).

Not used it loads (only just set it up - Bought a stand for it too, but need to bolt it to something, so at the moment I've used G-clamps to fasten it to a pallet! Shhhhhhh.. don't tell health & safety 😂. I did have a go with some 1095 steel (as I've got a few lengths to use for some making kitchen knives) and bejesus it moves metal SO MUCH faster than the old Clarke 1x0 I was using before! hahaaha.

Just need to finish rebuilding the forge now as can't heat treat at the moment, so will get a better feel for it after then (don't wanna grind too much b4 heat treating for fear of warping!).

Cheers everyone again, really appreciate our help & advice!

Oh, and 50 x 2000 vs 2x72, I couldn't decide but checking I saw a lot of places had 2x72 belts in stock, so went with that.
