I just purchased eight 11x9 sheets for $1 at the swap meet. The guy had a whole box. Anybody use this stuff?

Is this good for sharpening blades?

Is it the same as 1000 grit sandpaper?

Is your Crocus Cloth red in color? I don't have any, but online descriptions for some of this material suggest it uses iron oxide (red) as the abrasive. If so, it's likely too soft for use on hardened knife steels. 'Crocus' is usually associated with iron oxide polishing abrasive used on softer metals (jewelry, brass, etc.) and gemstones.

Other online descriptions seem to suggest at least some so-called 'Crocus Cloth' products use aluminum oxide (emery) abrasive, which are hard enough for knife steels, and may be useful for sharpening/polishing, depending on grit size. Some 'emery cloth' products would be a lot coarser than would likely be useful for knife sharpening.

My cloth is red. I used it on my Mora Robust just to see how it works. It did polish the finish, it didn't do to well in sharpening, it could have been operator error though. I wish I could compare to 1000 grit sandpaper or 1k water stone, but I have no experience with those. When I sharpen my knives, I usually go 600 grit sandpaper, then I strop.

I'll keep using it just as a finishing tool.

Thanks for the input OWE.
