I'm going to buy a Quark AA2 R2 edition and was wondering if it would be okay to use 14500s with the AA2. If not, what would be my best option to use with the AA2? Energizer Ultimate Lith?

Forgive me as I'm nearly clueless when it comes to flashlights.

No Li-ions in the 2xAA body. You can probably still buy the single AA body, and that would allow you to use 1 14500. 2xNimH or Lithium AAs...alkaline is fine too, but won't last long if you use the high mode a lot.

Get yourself some Eneloop AA (nickle metal hydride) batteries off the internet, as they have a very low self-discharge rate. See thomasdistributing.com. Or grab any NiMH rechargeable batteries and charger at Walmart. Your Quark will find these very tasty, and you get "free" lumens.

I realized that now :o. The 14500s are rated at 4.2v a piece and the AA2 says its rated for 4.2v total. I don't know why that didn't register at first.

Sounds good. I'll either use the mass quantity of Energizer Ult Lith that I have now or order some Eneloops.

Thanks guys!

You're right, the AA2 Head takes 4.2V max

Over-driving it at 8.4V will no doubt burn the electronics

There are a lot of people who over-drive the Mini AA with a 14500 Battery, that's putting a 1.5V operational light at 90OTF Lumens to 4.2V and 260 Lumens

Yes, but the MiNi is only current regulated, not voltage regulated, so there's a lot less potential for failure.

A Quark 1AA head with 2 li-ions will poof pretty quick since it's only designed to regulate up the 4.2V, while the MiNi doesn't have any voltage regulation.

You could get the 1232 head and put it in on the AA2 body if you really wanted to use 2 x 14500s. The AA, AA2, and 123 all use the same head, but the 1232 one is a different circuit. Same threads and all that though.

Eh, I'm not really worried about it. I don't really need the extra output that the 14500s provide. I'm ordering the AA2 as I type this.
