7.5 Earthquake Nepal

Smoke and prayers up, indeed: I'd burn my house down, if I thought it would help.

I can scarcely think of how this disaster could have been worse . . .

I found this before-and-after photo of Durbar Square, UNESCO World Heritage Site in Kathmandu. So sad.

Prayers on the way for the Kamis and all of their countrymen.

Oh No....more bad news. Another earthquake, magnitude 6.9 and even shallower than the last one has set off more collapsing of already weakened buildings and injured more people already trying to cope with yesterdays major quake. http://www.cnn.com/2015/04/26/asia/nepal-earthquake/

Please pray very hard for these beleaguered people. They need all the help the can get.

So much devastation. So much heartbreak. I've been monitoring the news steadily since the quake and the news is mind boggling and mind numbing.

As of today it seems the known death toll has reached 5,000 people in the Kathmandu and near surrounding areas. This is disheartening considering there is still many places in that area needing assistance/rescue and considering that as of yet many of the areas in the Gorkha region nearest the epicenter of the quake have yet to be accessed, assessed and assisted due to landslides/mudslides blocking many roads and trails into these areas. Only today have some volunteers even begun to reach these areas and it's not looking good. Many entire small villages have been either flattened by the quake or wiped out by landslides. As many of these areas are so remote that they are only quickly accessed by helicopter, assistance and even the most basic necessities have not been forthcoming as yet for most.
It is speculated that before all is known that the death toll could easily reach the 8,500 toll taken in the magnitude 8.2 earthquake of 1932. It is further speculated that this may not be the last major quake in the area at this time as the energy released by this major tremblor did not release all it needed to.

This is so bad, with search and rescue still going on, with weakened structures vulnerable to shaking, and landslides a continuing threat.

I saw some television images of what looked like localized landslides. A rocky hillside would collapse into rubble, destroying all the houses in its path. This happening in many parts of the country, probably worst in the higher, more remote locations. People have to stay outdoors in terrible weather, heavy rain, and food supplies not getting to many of the remote locations. Even staying in a tent is not safe if you're in the wrong place when a landslide occurs.
