7.62 AR Uppers?

Can anyone recommend a 7.62 upper for my Stag lower? The lowers are interchangeable, right? My AR currently exists as a 5.56 Stag 2T. I was thinking it would be fun to try a new upper/chamber size. Any suggestions?

I could be wrong, but I think you would need a new lower as well because the magazine size is different. 7.62 is a longer bullet.

7.62x39 and 300bo will both fit, but the 7.62x39 has reliability issues because of the feeding angle. If you want .30 cal I would definitely go with 300bo

I've heard about that problem but that was a while ago, does the problem still exist? It's seems like more and more companies are offering that caliber you would think they've worked out the problems by now.

It's still a problem. RRA offers an ar that uses ak mags, but the uppers and lowers are not interchangeable with other ars. The shape of the 7.62x39 case is what causes the feeding problem. It just doesn't line up properly when it comes out of an ar mag well.

I'm sure there are some gun nuts that can describe it better than I can.

The 300 Blackout seems to be a great round from everything that I have read. If you want a .308 you need to go to an AR10 lower.

i just ordered a milled AK this past weekend but had been thinking about a x39 AR. heard all the same stuff about the mags. think there was youtube video where a guy recommends a certain style or brand of magazine to use. and i may still pick a lower to build a x39 pistol on.

The feeding problem is not much of an issue if you use the proper mags. Check out ASC mags they are awesome for 7.62x39. They are mags specifcally built for feeding 7.62x39 to an AR. I built an upper recently just for the cheap thrills of this caliber. Unless you plan on going SBR or running a suppressor I wouldn't run it.

I have an Olympic K30R (7.62x39). We swapped uppers with 5.56.."just to see" and it worked just fine. I love my K30, but the mags are hard to find. Well, I should say the "correct" mags are hard to find.

So with the correct mags, my AR15 lower should/may/will work with a 7.62 upper? I'm not dead set on 7.62. Just something "bigger" that will fit my lower. Are you guys saying 300bo fits that description?

Yes, 300bo would be the best option in my opinion. It's based on the 5.56 cartridge and it was made for the ar platform

It looks like the only difference in the uppers between a 5.56 nato and 300 BLK is the barrel? So I guess I could technically use my existing BCG and charging handle? I don't know if I want to use one BCG in two uppers. Would that be an issue?

Well, if you really want 7.62x39, why put it on a platform for which it wasn't designed. For the price of an AR upper (which, as Garth said, is available), you can get an entire AK semi-auto platform. The AK with that caliber is pretty much the most reliable combat platform in the world.

Nah, like I said, I'm not stuck on 7.62x39. I'm more set on using the AR platform I already have. If there is a better cartridge than the x39 (like the 300 BLK) for my AR lower, thats what I'll look at. 300 BLK uppers seem out of stock everywhere though.

I had the same question years ago, intrigued by the low cost of the 7.62x39 ammo and the versatility of being able to shoot two inexpensive calibers from the same lower. A 556 or 223 lower will (technically) work with a 7.62x39 upper.

But after asking several guys experienced in the matter, I opted not to go that route because it compromises the reliability of the rifle. AR platforms just arent meant for 7.62x39. The problem is the fixed magwell (strait) on the AR platform and the curved nature of the AK mags the 7.62x39 round requires. It's just not a good fit.

300 BO is a good option but expensive unless you are a reloader. My suggestion would be to either go with a rifle made to shoot the 7.62x39 or step up to a AR10 platform in .308. Good luck...

I, personally, would go the 300bo route. It's becoming more and more popular.

On the other hand, I know some people that are very happy with their SKS's.
