just won this and was wondering about the age. in looking at the catalogs the 7 OT makes an appearance in 1979/80 then does not reappear til 1991. the drawing in '91 show three pins and in '79 no drawing. my question is since the LB 7 was 4 pin in 1979 is it a good be to think that this is a 7 OT from 1979? hope so. plus goes well with my 3 pin 7 OT.

Interesting topic. I was not aware of this pattens production years. Illustrations are sometimes not very good indicators of the actual production. A quick look on Ebay finds two 4 pin carbon, a 3 pin carbon, and a 3 pin stainless version. I'll keep an eye out for a 4 pin stainless, just to ensure Schrade made the 7-OT equally confusing as the LB7. Isn't this the pattern with knives stamped with and without the dash? :D

G'day Delmas, that looks like the '79 version to me. The first 7-OT's were issued in 1979 as 75th Anniversary knives which was etched on their master clip blade.<1904 to 1979> I have that 75th Anniversary version MIB with the 4 pins and the earliest stamping 7-OT and SCHRADE instead of SCHRADE+... and yours looks identical apart from the etch which may have simply worn off.....later versions did not have the "-" and appeared as 7OT as Thawk suggests........Nice knife 32 years old now.....Hoo Roo

All yellow brass furniture. I didn't realize it was unusual when I bought it. This one has the box, sheath, etc. as well. I thought a larger picture might be of value.

when i get it, will take photos of it along side the 3 pin 7 OT to see if any other variants occur. i know on the LB 7, the blades change shape significantly, ie. nail nick and general shape. as far as production years i was surprised it, the 7 OT was listed in 1979/08 with no "new" designation in the price list but in 1991 it is in the price list as "new" along with the 5 OTG. since i love lockbacks i have looked at the price lists and the 3 OT came out in 1986, the 5 OT out in '87, and the 6 OT in '95. the hugmongus 51OT made its debut with the LB7 in '78 and dropped out in '81. now i am tired from looking at all those prices lists.

The 7-OT disappeared from the price list by 1981 so the first release of this pattern was short being only 1979 - 1980. I believe all of these would have been 4-pin. It seems that by the time the pin change happened in the LB-7 this Old Timer was no longer in production.

When it came back as "New" in 1990 or 1991 ( http://www.collectors-of-schrades-r.us/FLYERS/1990s/pages/SC90-001.htm ) it was a 3-pin model with a high carbon steel blade and was listed as such from 1991-1994.

In 1995 the blade was changed to Schrade+ stainless as shown on the '95 price-list ( http://www.collectors-of-schrades-r.us/pricelist/images/1995-PRICELIST.pdf ). It was on the price-list right up until 2004 so stainless 3-pin models are from 1995-2004.

In short:

1979-1980: 4-pin High Carbon Steel

1990(?) or 1991-1994: 3-pin High Carbon Steel

1995-2004: 3-pin Schrade+ stainless

I have the 75th Anniversary model too. Here's a link to a thread I started a while back with some pics of it with and it's bling: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=683788

Yours looks extra cool. Love the patina on the blade! It almost looks like it's been blued. Good score!

The 7OT was indeed released in 1979 which was the 75TH anniv.
I quote "Here it is! For 1979 - The LB7 - The Ultimate Lock- Back - The most highly advertised - highly accecpted - and highly desirable of the lock-Backs. The most talked about knife in 1978 has now ben made equally desirable as our new 7OT Old Timer Lock-Back with carbon butcher steel blade, Old Timer sawcut handles, brass bolsters and brass Old Timer shield. This will be available as a regular line item for mid March delivery.
NOW HEAR THIS
Schrade is making a special production run of this knife with the blade etched "Schrade 75th Anniversary" and serialized.
This is a special knife we want every Dealer and every distributor salesman to have as his very own - for his own use - for his own private collection. "

Here is what the dealer has to do to earn this beautiful knife:
..... Basically the special 7OT was a give away for refilling a pre-pack deal for 342.75 1 per order.from March 15th - June 30th.
The un etched version of the knife was available to us mere humans in the standard line (note the not use of "he".. No woman salesman in the company in 1979!)
Oh and a little info for the big sterling silver clasp 1979 "Commemorative 75" knife info The 1st in the series was an award for the top salesman of the year. Knives 2-50 sold for $1,000.00 serial 51 and up for 100.00
Enough for now..

With the recent discussions about the 4-Pin 7-OT, I've been telling myself I should post.
Got a pair of these guys last year about a month apart from the same seller on the auction site.

Only this one has the "Free Goods" wrapper on the sleeve.
Kinda goes with Larry's post about a storekeeper earning one "for his own private collection."

Also in Larry's post there's talk of serialization!
I'm not finding any such in the examples I have.
Kinda disappointed - got me right out the chair and digging for Gold (well, Brass).

Please, if anyone can post a pic of a serialized example, I'd like to see where it's located!!

Howie

Here's a copy of an inter-office memo from 1978 detailing the giveaway knife that Larry referred to, as well as the excellent examples posted by Rich and Cal, I like the "free goods" stamp! See item #4 for the details, note the quite large number of giveway knives!:

Here's a question for Calvin, Howie, Larry H, Dick and anyone else who might have a 75th Anniversary etched 7-OT.

Often when I buy 30 year old Schrades the sheaths are cracker dry having never been treated with any conditioner etc. Not so with my 75th 7-OT. It definitely has been treated with something and it's the right something too. The sheath is very supple and in perfect working condition. I'm pretty sure it's been bees-waxed.

Question: Are the sheaths you guys got with your examples treated with anything? Did Schrade beeswax these sheaths?

Normally I'd just think it was done by a previous owner but both knife and sheath are unused so it would have been conditioned only to be stored away in it's box, with it's bling and I'm thinking few people do this.

For the record there is no serial # on my example and I checked inside liners etc.

Dave,
Congrats on your 75th Anniv win.
I can't really tell of any special care on mine - just seem to be well cared for while stored and not handled.
