Hey guys,

So I've got a Jet 2"x42" with 8" disc and I've been very happy with it.

The 8" disc that came with it was cast aluminum and always had a pretty good warp. Well, it developed a crack - right around the center where the collar comes out and mounts to the motor shaft. It must have been going for a while and I never noticed because the crack has traveled a wavy full circle around the mount! Basically I know it's going to fall apart if I use it again lol

I can buy a replacement from JET for about ~$60. Does anybody know of a source for higher quality discs? I know 8" is a weird size and I personally haven't been able to find any. I'm not looking for a very, very precise degree of flatness but at least a usable degree of flatness.

I know I could try brazing the crack but since it's cast aluminum I had my doubts about the degree of success I would have. Also just considered making my own disc out of MDF like you see guys doing on youtube all the time - but I also had doubts about the durability of such a disc.

Any advice or tips at all are welcome. I unfortunately don't have access to lathes or mills

Thanks in advanced!

8" is not a weird size. Both lapidary and metallurgical folks use 8" discs. Covington makes them for $75 https://covington-engineering.com/supplies/aluminum-heads/
I bought some of mine here http://therockshed.com/index.html, about $60 with shipping.

Awesome, thank you man! The Covington discs are exactly what I was looking for. Are these normally called 'heads' ?

I kept finding results for 6" discs, 9" discs, and 12" discs haha. Never ending results for 6" discs! Maybe I wasn't using the right terminology!

A timely thread (for me)! Scrounging parts to make my own disc grinder vs buying premade
Thanks

If making your own from start rather than fitting an existing tool, I’d recommend going with a 9” disc instead. Works perfect for using 9x11 sheets of paper as an economical source of access to high grits. I got mine from usaknifemaker. From there all you need is a standard 3 phase 56c motor and your vfd and you’re in business. Don’t worry about needing lots of power because you aren’t hogging.

as said, 8" is a standard industry size. you can find plain or PSA discs in paper or cloth, with grit from 24 to 4000, AO, SiC, and ceramic. I have seen two types of metal discs, one is a single cast piece the other the actual disc holder is held on with 3 screws.

Grizzly makes a 1" X 42"/ 8" disc sander. The replacement 8" disc is aluminum, part# PH8192100 and costs $15.00.
I needed a disc for an old Duro belt and disc sander I bought, and so I ordered one of those from Grizzly. It has a 5/8" hole with keyway, which I had to bush to fit my sander's 1/2" shaft.
Hope this helps.

Heck yeah that helps! I can get one of these immediately while I wait to budget in Covington's fully machine 6061 option. Thanks man :)

Anyone know a good source for affordable larger disks? I see grizzly has a 12" one available, but they don't seem to sell just the disk for their 20" model.
