What’s the difference between the 941 and 943 besides handle color? The last year of 941 were made with S30V so that’s not it. Just wondering why retire the 941 and bring back essentially the same knife as the 943?

941 is not retired. They are different blade shapes.
941- reverse tanto
943- clip point

You're thinking of the 940.

940-reverse tanto green scales
941-clip point green scales
942 reverse tanto black scales
943 clip point black scales

All 4 models were being produced at the same time. I'm not sure why they gave them different model numbers instead of just making it a 941BLK or something like that.

Thanks for the info Corey. Nbrackett and I were discussing this topic earlier today. Based on that info it looks like the difference in the 941 & 943 was solely the aluminum handle color.

Where it gets interesting is when you look at the 941s with the BC1 coating, the 941 limiteds with the different colored handles (Like the red one), etc. If what made the model a 941 was the handle color, could they have just labeled the limited bc1 red handle version a 943 when it came out?
Did the bc1 coating make it a 941 because they didn’t put that coating on 943s? Or was it just a timing thing?

I know someone here will have the answers.

I believe the 940 was introduced sometime in mid 2000, then the 942 was added in early 2001, then the 941 in late 2001, and the 943 in early 2002. The red 941 was made before they released the 943. So I'm guessing they just chose to use the 942/943 model numbers since those were going to be full time production knives and anytime there was a limited edition, they would use the 940/941. Doesn't really jive with the 940-1 & 940-2, but that's what it seems like they did early on anyway. There was never any limited edition 943, but there was a 942 that came out in 2007 (942D2-701).

I’ve noticed some knife dealers advertising the 943S and 943SBK are “Discontinued?” Anyone know when this occurred?

I was unable to locate those models on Benchmade’s website today either; however, the plain 943 versions remain available.

from what Jason has said on the benchmade forum it sounds like they are discontinuing the serrated versions of several models.
