I just read in the current issue of Sports Illustrated that Madison Bumgarner, the SF Giant pitcher and World Series hero whom SI named their Sportsman of the Year, "was married in a white, open-collar shirt and blue jeans while carrying a pocketknife." No additional info about the knife is given; maybe it's not even a traditional folder despite my categorization of Bumgarner as an "old school" pitcher. Any hard-core Giants fans here who can shed any light on what knife Bumgarner carries?

Are there other "famous" slipjoint users of which you're aware?

(FWIW, the article also has a story about how the region in western NC from which Bumgarner comes became the furniture capitol of the world for a while; the story involves a train that wrecked there carrying a load of furniture from Grand Rapids, MI, once known as "the Furniture City" and where I live.)

Well I know for a fact that the Country singer Blake Shelton carries a Case sowbelly more often than not.

Tom Sellech was on one of those night talk shows, and showed how to graft an avocado tree. He used what looked like some kind of GEC or Queen pocket knife with jigged bone scales.

Both Chuck Yeager and Charles Lindberg carried small SAK's.

Dwight D. Eisenhower was a pocket knife carrier. Small Case pen knife.

Hence the pattern called "Eisenhower". Reportedly Ike ordered these by the dozen and gave them as gifts to all manner of people, including Foreign Head's of State.

Gary Powers the U2 pilot shot down by the Soviets carried an SAK that the Soviets were very fond of displaying as spy equipment...

Blake Shelton also carries a Case Russlock, which was confiscated by the TSA. They showed it on The Voice and it was also on the Case Facebook page.

I have a Northwoods Stag Peanut that was once owned by John Hart, a TV and movie actor from the late 30's to the early 80's. He was in a lot of western movies and was on several series including Rawhide. He played the Lone Ranger for a season when Clayton Moore was having a salary dispute and he was Hawkeye in the Hawkeye and the Last of the Mohicans TV series. He had a lot of Case, Queen, Robeson, Remington and other traditionals.

That's cool. How did you acquire that knife?

Thanks for the interesting info, everyone!
Ted, do you know what model SAK that is in Gary Powers pack? And just below and to the right of it, do I see another pocketknife (probably not spy equipment :))?
Brisket, can you post a photo of the John Hart stag Peanut, if you have one?

Abe Lincoln was carrying a congress when he got shot. The knife is on display now with the other items in his pocket from that night.

A couple years ago Blade or Knives Illustrated did an article on old time comedian Shelly Berman. He has quite a collection. His coffee table was a display case.

I bought it on ebay from John Hart’s agent who was selling some items from the estate.

That's worthy of mention, SI!? :D Did anyone here get married without a knife in his pocket!? A Victorinox Tourist walked down the aisle with me.

Well, I'll admit I got married with no knife in my pocket:(. In fact, there was almost never a knife in my pocket from the time I was 17 until I was 62. Now, as "penance", I carry multiple knives to make up for lost time. :D I currently have 6 in my pants pockets, 1 in a coat pocket, and 3 scattered around the desk as I type this. Maybe my wife and I should renew our vows with me being appropriately equipped.

Brisket, thanks for posting the photo. That's a very handsome Peanut!!

Thanks for the link, Dave. I suppose it's not surprising that celebs like their custom knives.
