TRADITION AND CHANGE: THE SHEFFIELD CUTLERY TRADES 1870-1914 by Sally-Ann Taylor
I came across this unpublished doctoral thesis from 1988, and have found it an absolutely fascinating read. It covers everything from the working conditions of Sheffield cutlers during this period, to the scandal of fraudulent stamping by some of the Sheffield manufacturers. The two volumes, comprising nearly 500 pages, cover the subject matter in great detail, with meticulous references. While this may be excessive for the casual reader, for anyone who is seriously interested in this subject, it is a compelling read, packed with information.
Both volumes of Ms Taylor's document can be viewed or downloaded here:
Volume One: http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/5990/1/259670_VOL1.pdf
Volume Two: http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/5990/2/259670_VOL2.pdf
