I have seen pictures and videos of you beckerheads at the gatherings cutting free hanging rope. I have never tried this but would like to. I just have a few questions....

Which sized knife would work better?
Convexed edge or V, better for this ?
which type rope to buy, and any suggestions where?

Thanks for any answers, and any tips you would like to share are welcomed too.

Any sized knife really. The test is testing the cutting efficiency of the knife. Be careful not to confuse cutting efficiency with sharpness.

Convexed edge or V, better for this ?
convex because it increases cutting efficiency (generally speaking) by eliminating an abrupt angle change between the primary and secondary bevels, allowing less resistance and better cutting efficiency

I guess hemp rope, but I think it is hard to find in the US. I am not sure to be honest. I haven't been in the states for years, but IMO, nothing made of synthetic fibers.

Any knife longer than 4". I would recommend starting with something like a 9, until you get your form, technique and aim down.

I use a V edge, works for me.

1" oiled sisal is what we use. It don't roll over for belly scratching.

The technique and form are just as important as the knife, especially when you move down to smaller knives.

Thanks guys! ill grab some rope and i think ill try convex and V and see which works better for me.

GB, try looking for the gathering threads, there are pictures of the rope cutting in them.

I believe Moose and Doc(Average Iowa Guy) have both posted the video of Mr. Fisk explaining the cutting technique to use.

Can you really get a better rope cutter than a "Fisked" BK-5?

Yup, I saw this one.....Yes, I saw you in there too Murph (well, I think it was you)

Very informative and entertaining...but I learned the wrong lesson.......which is......Any thing sharpened under the tutelage of Mr Fisk will do the trick. That guy is just awesome.

Maybe this will help, there's an organized competition for this. Google BladeSports and/or "World Cutting Championships"... these are the folks that chop through lined up bottles of water, dimensional lumber, rolling golf balls, etc. They do free hanging rope cuts, the pics I've seen look like jute or some natural fiber. Perhaps they have a "standard" rope, maybe they just all compete with the same material at an individual competition?

Yes i have seen a lot of these vids, even a world record cut a few years back of 15 one inch ropes in a single cut! damn impressive. I also seen where someone cuts through a whole case of water!

Im going to look for the Fisk video but if you have a link id appreciate it. I also already ordered some 1" manilla rope.. rope is more expensive than i imagined .... especially when i just plan to cut it up, and i could not find 1" sisal, just 1/2 inch.

will manilla work?

Sisal IS best because it is easier to cut.......Hemp is oiled with what smells like kerosene and the fibers of hemp are stronger too.......Oil makes the edge sliiiide along the surface......Heheheh......The sisal is frequently out of stock because at the one inch size people are looking for strength and rot resistance.......The cut-offs make for great erosion control.......
