I'm looking for a good durable and reliable fixed blade for utility purposes thats costs around $50 and under. If anyone has any suggestions I'm all ears... thanks!

Spyderco Moran drop point, with the VG10 blade will do anything and everything you might need a knife for except chopping. I got mine for about $50. One other great feature of the Moran drop point is how light weight it is. You can carry the knife forever, and hardly notice it.

Yes... the Ka-bar is what I'm leaning towards... I just don't want to get the on in the stupid USMC sheath...the Marines are cool and all but why can't the shetah be plain?! I don't know...lol

schrade sharpfinger carbon steel version I got a drop point version from smoky mountain knives for around $15 thats a steal.

You can get a Becker CU7 for $50 at Bayou Lafourch Knife Works for $49.99. They also have the Cold Steel Master Hunter or SRK in Carbon V for $54 (but I've read here you could get a "second" from Cold Steel for much less) and they have a couple Marbles' for that price. Their site is cool because you can search by price point.

You also might check out www.wholesalehunter.com. They have the Carbon V Master Hunter for under $50 (not to mention Bushmen for $11 and $13--talk about bare-bones utility), but Wholesale Hunter charges more for shipping than most. My Yari was $65 but they charged $11 for shipping for a total of $76.

The Becker C/U 7 would be my choice also at that price point. The Becker line are excellent knives for a modest amount of money.

Buck Nighthawk. I have a pair of 'em, and they are an excellent value.:).

For $50.00 you can get around 5 Frosts Mora knives which should last you several generations. Other fixed blades would be the classic Ka-bar USMC, or one of Ontario's Spec-Plus models.

Buck Nighthawk without a doubt. This knife has taken
abuse that I'm ashamed to admit to.

Of all the fixed blades I own the 'hawk is my favored in the
5>6" range. :D :D

El Cid - I have to disagree. My GMom used a mora to the bitter end and it only took her 15 years of constant use and abuse (periodical sharpenings). So 5 moras only mean about 60-100 years use - that is only one to two generations. :D

crazy nick - any carbonsteel puukko will make a great utility blade - that is what puukko is. It does'n pretend to be the nondestructible survival knife - it is only tool for constant long term use.

bushman is what i use for cutting, digging, chopping a little, anything

sharpen ut on a rock

my wife says her mini bushman is the best gardening tool that exists

buy a couple

I second the nominations for:

Spyderco Moran
Becker C/U 7
Buck Nighthawk.

It really depends on what you will be doing with the knife.

Kellam knives sells a nice little pukko with a forged blade about 4" with a red plastic handle. It's a super little knife for $15.00. They are also very nice people to do business with.

Fudo, I bought one of those knives from them at the Tulsa Gun Show a couple of years ago for my son. His mom has pretty much taken it over for use in the kitchen. It is an excellent cutter.

It also happens to be my knife of choice for cleaning frog legs.

You couldn't go wrong with one of these or with the Old Timer Sharpfinger. Excellent performance, excellent value.

While it's true that I prefer the Buck Nighthawk over many other
blades that cut as good or better the reason is like all military
knives they are designed to be tough enough to DO ANYTHING.

That to me it true utility. When you actully do have only one knife
to use ,in my book it had better be a military design i.e. Ka bar,
Nighthawk ,C/U7 etc. Yeah, and the neat part is they are all
cheap enough for the goverment to give'm away or for the
G.I. 's to buy'em.:D :D
