Things can change quickly in today's world. Soon we may again be "surging" young men into harm's way somewhere in the wide world.

What would you recommend as a utility belt knife for a trooper in any combat role in our military today?

First assume that some rich uncle is buying with price not an issue.

Then assume that the warfighter is buying it himself from what he gets paid.

I am now seeing Randall knives at or near a grand or immediate delivery online. Chris Reeve knives are not much less.

Next consider the same two purchase parameters but for a pocket folder, then a multi-tool.

For the belt, either of these two was literally designed for this. Utility “fighters”:

The 2nd one is more affordable and easier to get (for the next few weeks at least :) ).

Too many folders to pick from to go along one of the two above; a Spyderco Military might be a good choice, for instance.

I think that the old Kabar fits the bill just fine; it's been opening crates and "deanimating" enemy combatants for 80 years. I like the updated version with the polymer handle and sheath and I think a 5 inch blade is a little easier to weild and use than the traditional 7. Mine has seen many miles and a lot of tasks (no combat, thankfully) and has never failed. Plus it's not super expensive so when you lose or break it (I have a healthy respect for Mr. Murphy!) it can be replaced fairly easily.

As for a folder I'd go with an Emerson A100 - barebones quality, big enough but not too big, easy to maintain and pretty easy to carry. As for a multitool, I'd choose a Victorinox Swisstool; good selection of tools, great quality.

If prying on stuff is in the mix as well, you may also want to check out a tanto bladed knife.

Various handle materials… Rubber, G10, Micarta, Maple or Walnut wood.

Price approximately 350-370 depending on handle material and whether smooth or sculpted.

Multi-Tool, my preference is the SwissTool Spirit X.

Folder… pick one, many options.

Machetes are cheap and also available in stainless. Why over pay and overthink. Brand names don’t matter when they’re staring you in the face. And the price you paid doesn‘t scare them away.

If I’m in the thick of it?

A Bob Terzuola designed Camillus CQB fixed blade with taco style kydex sheath. Awesome ergonomics, combat oriented.

A Cold Steel Recon 1 clip point XHP hollow grind, don’t feel like I need to explain that choice.

Leatherman PST II, because I’m already loaded with other stuff and it’s proven to me.

Something cheap. Today's military bases and base housing are full of thieves.

My son had his garage broken into (base housing) and a lot of his gear stolen. Including the BK7 and custom damascus Dirk Pinkerton I gave him.
