I have been considering a knife for self defense. I normally carry a cold steel 5 inch folder. I keep that knife for its purpouse- self defense and a smaller knife for utility.

I have been considering a cold steel bear . Would that do as a good fixed blade for self defense . I am more interested in self defense than the legel aspects.

If you have some advise on the brand and size of the blade and serrated or non seratted please let me know . thank you for your help .Jay Wyatt

I just picked up a Cold Steel Kobun(the 420 version not Carbon V) for this same purpose. I picked it beacuse its pretty long, Light as hell, and small and easy to conceal. Plus its cheap. I usualy put mine in a neck configuration(I just use a piece or paracord for the string)

get ya a buck/strider tanto or spearpoint, ya wont be dissapointed i promise.........

Why do you feel that you need a "knife" for self- defense ?

If you're in a area where you need some sort of protection. . . Leave that area immediately ! The only folks that I know of. . . that can't take a walk during a bad situation ~ LEO's, PI's or bad guy's.

OK. . .and super hero's.

Aren't there other weapons that you could pick instead of knives (and guns) ?

What you need is device that will keep your perp at a minimum of arms length plus the length of weapon in your hand(s). Canes and walking sticks are typically 3 - 3.5' in length and with the right accessories/modifications and moves ~ can be an extremely powerful and at times lethal weapon.

The reason that I say this. . .stab someone and you'll play hell with the cops and the courts. Pound the hell out of a perp with a cane or walking stick and you'll probably get a pat on the back.

Better question. . .what training have you received that increases your capabilities of carrying a "weapon for self defense?"

Not trying to be a "ass" but let's be real ! How often have any of our knife knut buds "really" used their knives for protection of or in any type of self-defense ?

The numbers are few. . . Then you'd have to ask numerous questions to figure out why ? Not that it doesn't happen ~ ~ but how often ? It's rare (to say the least). . .

Anyway. . .

If you absolutely have the need for a knife. . . Question ~ ~

Is your intent on stealth (rapid, quiet, etc. . .) movement(s) ?

- Get a fixed blade !

If your intent is to create initial shock value ?

- Go auto or OTF. The sound of an opening auto or OTF is staggering when you want to see fear in the eyes of the one in front of you !

Word of caution. . . If you're in a area that requires a self-defense item ~ keep in mind what the bad guy may be carrying and may use "after" you pull your $hit on him.

Again, If your in a area where you need some sort of protection. . . Leave that area immediately !

If you get jacked up. . . Give up your wallet, money, rings, watches, etc. . . And walk away with your and your loved ones lives. That crap is easy to replace and only your pride needs to heal !

Just my opinion and advice. . .

Hello Banditele,

I think the ultimate self-defense knife is the Randall Model 14. Of course, these can be hard to find and will be much more expensive than the Cold Steel knife you mentioned.

A far cheaper option than the Randall 14 is the Cold Steel Recon Scout. There are also the Cold Steel Military Classic, Cold Steel Recon Tanto, Aitor Nato Bowie, various Kabars, Ontario Bagwell bowies, Junglee Hatori Fighter, SOG bowies and Desert Dagger, and the military contract Marine Combat knives.

There is really a bewildering variety of fighting knives that one can choose from. On the other hand, you might want to reconsider the legal issues and find something with a utilitarian name and primary purpose.

Seriously. Doing someone with a knife, I GUARANTEE YOU IS NOT SOMETHING YOU WANT TO DO. Knife fighting is very hard, messy, smelly and it WILL affect you the rest of your life. If you are not trained to REALLY use it, it will probably be used against you. Avoid trouble if you can. If you can't, run. If you can't do any of that, a knife ain't gonna help. As for the Black Bear in the hands of an experienced person, very nice knife. The design is classic. Welcome to Bladeforums. Please don't think me an ass. But, trust me on this one. ;)
Edit:
GigOne,
That is cool how we posted basically the smae response. You posted first, but I admit, I skipped over it b4ecause it looked too long. :o I felt guilty, so I went back and read it. I guess we are both asses.

GigaOne, The Magician,
Good advise. If you believe a knife is a good defensive weapon, you are going to escallate a bad situation you are not prepared for. With a walking cane, you can put an attacker down who has a knife and keep him/her down. With a better stick, you can do more. Don't swing the stick, jab with it if you are sure a gun is not present.

If you pull a knife, you need to be in very close proximity to your attacker. Your attacker probably knows more about attacking than most of us know about defending. And, how many attackers did not think to bring a gun?

Another strategy, put a money clip in your pocket. Put a twenty on the outside and a huge wad of ones on the inside. If someone demands money, throw it down and run away. I am 235 pounds and very strong. I am a veteran of the Vietnam War. But, I also know that I do not scuffle with people routinely. I have no problem running from a "professional". Just make sure your companion knows the plan and runs with you.

If you look for trouble, you will usually find it. Unfortunately, it never seems to come in the form and manner for which you are prepared.

Very true, Brother. The real thing is nothing like you think it is. Hopping around in your underwear with the "super ninja deathmonger knife" and saying stuff like " what! You sneaking up on me? Oh, you brought your friends...This is my kind of party! Hiya! Hiya! Take that...etc. Come on guys, like you never do stuff like that. I do. :o

I really wish you people would quit spying on me. What I do in the comfort of my own home is my business, and only the voices in my head can say otherwise.

I hear Bud K has the latest Super Ninja Deathmonger and the older Rambotron Slaymaster 5000 (With Laser Sight) in stock.

OK, hardheart. We put the telescopes and microwave transducers away. Feel free to do the Ninja. We will respect your privacy.

Can we sell any of the existing film? Some of this is good action.

I think I want to quit reading these self-defense threads. They are good examples of the total degeneration US culture has suffered. What human right can be more basic than self-defense? Yet, we have been taught that the police, courts, and lawyers are on the side of the attackers, and will make us sorry should we attempt self-defense.

What a sick society.:barf:

As a strictly defensive knife the Spyderco Civilian is hard to beat especially when the knife is to be used by someone with limited experience or training. However, I would not be comfortable using a knife in a self defense situation without extensive training.

At least that Spyderco knife has a harmless name. I have been accused of succumbing to "political correctness" by advocating the use of weapons disguised or named as tools, but I think it is just a means of turning the lefts' own weapon against them. I am not saying don't defend yourself - just deny the enemy the opportunity to use your choice of defensive weapons against you in court.

For a large fixed blade knife, one of the Bowie's with camping implications would be good - i.e., Trailmaker, Trailmaster, etc.

Jay,I take this self defense to mean last ditch effort, as I had minimul training and don't want to use deadly force unless it was to save my life. I carry a Cold Steel clip point Voyager, It may have saved my skin one night walking home from work I just stepped off the bus when something caught my eye as I turned there was this doberman
showing teeth and coming up fast. I quickly squared off with my now opened blade in hand and made up my mind in that instant I was going to kill this dog if attacked, in that moment the dog turned and walked away from me.
In my thirty years of having somekind of knife, this is the only time I had to pull it out,Let me tell you I was glad to have it that night.
Anyways,I hear the EDC by Camillus is a good buy in a folder.

Not a knock or anything, but I doubt a dog would care too much whether you had a knife or not. Granted, I would much rather have one if a dog actually decided it wanted to attack me.

Oh yeah, Larus? What about the satellites? What about the infrared satellites?????? The ones tuned into my brainwave transmissions!?!?!?! You bastids can't fool me! You will learn to fear my Kung-Fu Action

Oh, knife content. Sharp edge, strong lock(or none-fixed blade), mindset. That's about it. Now get those satellites outta my head.

Now I realize that the sort of fighting situations a woman is likely to get into is different from those a man is likely to get into. But it seems to me that one is better having a tool and not needing it than needing it and not having it. Now, in terms of self defense, my mind tends to go towards a situation of, this-guy-is-going-to-kill-me-right-now-if-I-don't-kill-him-first kind of attack versus some alcohol stimulated bar fight. If I have a murderer or rapists with a weapon on me, than I don't give a damn how much legal trouble I may have I'm gonna just want to like to talk to my lawyer.

I guess speaking as an ex-wrestler from High School soooo many years ago, if I'm close enough to use a knife, I would just as soon have a free hand. In my (limited) experience, if I can't end an encounter with evasive words, and bullets are out of the question, me and the perp are hittin' the mat.
