Is a boring knife. Half of my enjoyment of owning knives is sharpening them, maintaining them and even modifying them. I don't want some super steel that is hard or impossible to sharpen, and even if some future miracle steel was developed that never dulled, to me it would be a boring knife (unless they perfect a lightsaber).

Actually there is one I never sharpen, that is insanely sharp and that is not boring. In fact, it's one that I use the most!

I havnt sharpened this knife in over a year, I use it daily and for whatever reason I love it. I think it's Aus 6 or 8. I just strop it back (30seconds). But never sharpen it. I think n ewer people to the hobby would benifit from something like that rather than getting the hardest most wear resistant steel that everyone seems to be after now.

I've found myself getting cantankerous as I get older. I have several super steel blades, but I kinda don't like them. A good, easy to sharpen carbon steel suits me fine. I like being able to maintain an edge with a piece of leather with some jewelers compound rubbed in. I like fixing a ding with an Arkansas stone. I don't really like having to have special equipment to keep my knife sharp.

I enjoy sharpening and stropping my blades but I own so many that I could go years without sharpening if I chose.

With as long as dmt stones have been around I am baffled by why people think they are special equipment. For 20 ish dollars single sided dmt stones can be had that will sharpen ANY steel with ease. For 30ish dollars the dmt double sided stones can be had and you really expand your options.

I found my point of diminishing returns in these new super steels ... I enjoy sharpening personally ... and I like being able to get a keen edge on a knife without needing to spends 3 or 4 hours getting there.

and the performance of the "super steels" hasn't impressed me enough to warrent the added costs or the added expense of what I need to sharpen them ...

just one man's humble opinion ...

You can still enjoy sharpening with a super steel. You just need the right equipment and ability. It is not the steel's fault if you can't sharpen it.

I don’t know why but DMT stones seem to only chew up my edges and leave them in worse condition than when I started. I think with a fixed angle sharpener like the KME or something they might work better for me but freehand I have had zero luck.

I assume you have bad form, I have extra coarse/coarse/fine/extra fine/extra extra fine stones and can make every bit of my edge literally pop hair.

Just need more practice and use the sharpie trick. Practice on a knife you don't care about, preferably a low wear resistant one or kitchen knife.

It take a little while to get used to it but afterwards it's like using any other stone.

Maintaining proper angle and very light pressure gives me excellent results.

I don’t know I seem to have no problem with ceramic stones. I have been trying to figure out what I’m doing wrong with them for a while.

Ceramic stones are mad slow for doing serious work though. Even dmt stones seem to take forever to reprofile when I do get them to work.

I want to get one of those paper wheel sets.

It's not the dmt stone that's the issue unless by some ridiculous chance you have duds. Like I said, Maintaining proper angle with very light pressure/almost no pressure yields me hair popping results on s90v, s30v/35vn, z wear, 1095, niolox, sr101/52100, 154cm, m390 and more.
