A question about bone scales please?

I just received in the mail a very nice french pocket knife with bone scales. I stupidly attempted to polish the scales with a rag that apparantly wasn't clean. And as a result I appear to have either discolored the bone or scratched them. It really takes away from the appearance. Are there corrective actions I can apply to the bone to minimize this damage? Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Well, if you have really discolored the bone you can always attempt to dye them a darker , natural looking color. You could also Very Carefully try dabbing bleach with a q-tip on the darker spots although bear in mind bleach can and will weaken bone if not done carefully. You could also try lightly , slowly and gently sanding the scales until the top stain are gone , assuming the stains are not soaked in , in which case you should try to darken the whole scales to make them look uniform.

That is what I would try.
