a question about knives and molle webbing

I'm wondering how many of you have molle straps on your backpacks or bug out bags. If you do, do you use them to attach your knife sheath for carrying your knife?

For example, I have a pack that even has a few molle straps on the shoulder strap. I keep a small blade, handle down on the weak side for quick access. I also have a smaller pack that is covered with molle webbing, and I have a knife (and a few other things) attached for easy to reach convenience. I love 'em. But I also know a guy that would never attach his knife to the webbing because he's afraid that just makes them more tempting to steal.

The reason I'm asking is I'm wondering if it's worth the time to come up with a good molle attachment to the kydex sheaths I make for my knives or is a simple belt loop more desireable. Do enough of you even have the molle webbing on your packs to worry about it, or should it just be by request only?

thanks guys,

I have mounted a knife to MOLLE, but I prefer not to. I'd much rather have it on my body than on the pack/harness. If I lose the pack for some reason I still have the knife.

I don't know if you're aware of it or not but Blade Tech (maker of the Tek-Lok) makes a Molle-Lok* for precisely the usage you're asking about. I'd think the easiest way to handle those requests would be to keep a few of those on hand, they don't cost that much. I've never used it, but it seems like a good solution.

*I have no idea about that website, but it had the best pics of the Molle-Lok I found.

That or the Malice clip is the best way to go, IMHO.

The MOLLE attachment is a great idea.
I dont have any gear that has MOLLE attachments but i will soon get one of the Maxpedtion packs to attach my Gerber LMF2 which has a very secure sheath (jump out of aircraft proof) with MOLLE attachments that can be removed for belt carry or you can leave it on.

I think it's a good option. About the only place I'd put my knife on a MOLLE pack would be if it had a MOLLE hip belt; I've never placed one on the pack, nor the should straps. Now with that said, there are a few of us that have to wear body armor that has a MOLLE covering. I keep a knife attached to mine. Same goes with some tactical man-bags...several have MOLLE attachment point that would be nice to take adavantage of. I would make a few examples and leave it as an option.

Thanks for the input. I've used malice clips and I just hate them. Too much of a PITA to diddle with, and difficult to get back off if you want to move things around.

BlackHills, thanks for the link. I hadn't seen those. That's actually pretty similar to what I've come up with, except I use a hard action Pull-the-Dot-Snap. My only gripe about the add-on approach is that the attachment is on the side of the sheath. When it's on the pack, you've got leverage working against you. I want it inline with the center of the sheath, but then you've got a purpose built sheath that's not so convenient for other things.

Actually, one of the best methods I've seen to attach sheaths to packs is using 3/32" shock cord (thin bungee cord). Lace it through the sheath eyelets onto the pack webbing like a shoe lace and pull tight. A knot in the ends keeps it from pulling through the eyelets. It even works well for leather sheaths.

I rarely carry my knife on my belt, I prefer to have it on my pack. I'm all for carry options on sheaths and packs.

You're welcome. I understand what you're saying about the off-center, but if the sheath has eyelets on both sides then you can put a Molle-Lok on both sides and solve that problem.....assuming that the spacing is correct. I'm not sure if you noticed, but that price is for a pair.

I used the malice clip on my CSKII Sheath to attach it lengthwise to my Proteus pack. I'm not sold on it yet. I have attached a bunch of Sheaths, Pouches, and MOLLE compatible gear with zip ties. Its quick and it works, and you spend less money trying to find MOLLE compatible gear.
