Acid & stone wash

I picked up a Kershaw Chill the other day at the flea market so I'd have something to play with. It was only $20 and if I screwed it up so what, I wouldn't be out much. First I acid washed the blade and wasn't really happy, so I stone washed it to and I'm glad I did. I'm extremely happy with the results. Much better than I first expected. Here's a few pics. Let me know what you think.

Very nice. I might have to try this with my chill.
Whats the process for acid washing?

I've acid washed a couple of tester blades, I did 3 20 minute soaks in 50/50 PCB etching solution/water, with a dish soap and cold water wash in between each. They were 1095, times might need to be adjusted for different steels.

I soaked mine in the acid full strength for a hour. When I took it out I dipped it in hot water to clean it. The hot water keeps the dark color for some reason. What really helped it was the stone washing. I used a large peanut butter jar and some river rocks. Instead of WD-40 I used Pledge Revitalizing Oil with orange oil in it (That's all the lubricant I had). It only took about 10 minutes of shaking it to get the look I wanted. Hope this helps you out.

I have been wondering if you can acid wash a ZT 560 /561 being that it's Elmax stee . I have acid washed some Becker's before I just don't know much about the Elmax to know if it will work or how it will turn out. If anyone knows if it will work and if there are any different steps to take, I would really appreciate the help.

I'm actually in the process of trying this right now. I did 3, 20 min PCB soaks. It's going in the dryer with stones in a couple minutes. I'll post later today how it came out.

So here's the results, acid as stated above. This is after an hour in the dryer, "Nalgine style" water bottle, and soda bottle screw cap sized rocks from the drainage ditch. I think I'm going to tumble one more time, this time with some smaller rocks. I'd like to even it up and get in those harder to reach spots. Maybe I'll try getting the thumb studs off first, but I don't want to mess them up.

Thanks Chester. I went back today and did all the screws so they match.

2AC most thumb studs unscrew. Use a set of channel locks with a rag on the jaws so it doesn't mar the studs. I did a Kershaw One-ton before this one without the acid wash. I'll post a before and after pic here in a minute.
