Size depends on the type if work you want to do.
Low hollow grind hunting knives? Then smaller. Urasuki grinding? Bigger.
What do you hope to do with it?

I have hollow ground hundreds of blades and would recommend that if you are going to buy one wheel to start it probably should be a 10 inch wheel. The larger diameter the wheel is the higher the grind will be on the blade. Of course you can "walk up the grind" with a smaller wheel, say an 8 inch wheel but you can run the risk of grinding the center of the hollow too thin and burn a hole through the blade when finishing. I personally like the deep hollow look the 8 inch wheel gives but most knife makers prefer the 10 inch wheel. I also have a 14 inch wheel and it makes a grind most like a flat grind but I only use it on larger knives and 14 inch wheels are expensive. Maybe the other makers on this forum will suggest alternatives. Larry

I hollow grind a lot of knives and always start on an 8 inch wheel and do most all finishing on 10 inch, I f I were to only have one wheel it would be a 10 inch with 70 duro smooth instead of serrated wheel. The serrated is much more aggressive action and is what I use on initial pre heat treat, I bought my 10 inch wheel off ebay from a seller out of Pennsylvania and am well satisfied with it.

I'm getting into kitchen knives and I'm looking for larger contact wheels for hollow grinding. Does anyone know what height I get from 10", 12", and 14". Bimjo's chart is no longer on his website. Also, does anyone want to sell Nathan's 24" curved platten? Thanks.
Tim

I got my 10" wheel from Knifegrinderparts.com. It was fairly inexpensive in comparison to others on the market (about $180) and I haven't had any problems with it. It runs smooth and straight. They are currently out of stock but here is the website where you can get them- http://www.knifegrinderparts.com/products/rubber-contact-wheels
The guy who runs the site updates his Instagram when he gets more in stock. His name is pfunderfab

I just ordered a small wheel set from them today.

I've been looking at those and thinking about dropping the money on them. I just need to figure out the whole "Money" part :D I'm curious about their build quality. Care to share when you get some good use on them?

I have a 12" and like it although I do not hollow grind very much.
However, I really want an 18" or 20" wheel.
That size would be about perfect for the style of grind that I want.

Sure thing. I really wanted the rubber coated ones, but just don't have the money for them yet, but want to have better results when I have tight curves on a profile. Grinding them with a flat platen is a PITA.

Thanks! I hear ya, roughing out the radius's is a PITA. I just rough out the profile on the grinder, then use files and a Dremel to finish profiling it. I wrap sandpaper around a PVC pipe or a rubber coated drum sander spindle and that works well for finishing it up- just a bit more time consuming.

Yes. I have a 12" from Ameribrade. I like it just fine. I also use their 4" tracking wheel.

I'm assuming the price they list is without bearings. Kuraki did you buy your wheel, with or without bearings? I know the bearings are not expensive. Seems like a good price for the wheel.

It came with bearings. They're one of a few people who import chinese made wheels and then true them up and balance them. That's why they're slightly under 2" wide and slightly under the advertised diameter. Which bothers me little since I track the belt off either side anyway. They're not much undersize, maybe .060".

I looked around a lot and even had a couple of the companies that put rubber on wheels quote covering wheels that I made myself. Just having wheels I turned myself covered would have cost as much as an Ameribrade wheel complete with bearings.

That sounds good! I would much rather have a true running wheel.
