Hey all. Looking for some advice from people who have handled the Giant Mouse GMF1.

I have had my eye on this knife... have a GMF2 and have been interested in the GMF1.

They now have 2 versions... original one in N690, same size/shape (4mm thickness). They also put out a beefier M390 version that is thicker at 5mm.

Am torn between the 2. Looking for a EDC, daily driver fixed option for around the farm but also may work into general EDC, usually always do a folder. Usually have a heavy folder (PM2 or ACE biblio). I use my GMF1 or Nyala for hiking, backpacking. Corrosion resistance is a bonus as often wet and clammy, especially with winter coming.

Leaning towards the M390 but the slimmer form factor of original is appealing as well.

Appreciate all feedback in advance.

Here is link to the Giant Mouse Fixed Blade page... you can find each knife from there. didn't want to have to post multi links.

I have one of a different sprint run in M390 that is also the 5mm thickness. I like it quite a bit. I suspect that the thinner version would be a better slicer, though N690 will definitely need to be resharpened more often if you use it as an EDC.

But I don't think you could go wrong with either one if that's the size of fixed blade you're really looking for. It's a great little design. A lanyard or paracord wrap on the handle also really helps this one in hand, IMO.

The PM2 is a "heavy folder"?

That aside, I've tried a few small, skeletonized knives...and have decided I don't care for them. What stands out to me about the GMF1 is that it's so small.
My guess is that the 5mm version will feel marginally better in hand (but would still benefit from something additional, as suggested above by halden.doerge)...however, on such a short blade, 5mm thickness is a lot. (For reference, the LT Wright Patriot in AEBL has the same blade length... with a thickness of just under 3mm)

Personally, I would consider the GMF2 a much more useable knife, and you already have that... but this isn't about me. If you like it, or just want to try it, go for it. Give some thought to YOUR preferences with regard to aesthetics, blade steel, and functionality; and choose accordingly.
Best of luck with the process - hope you enjoy the knife.

Thank you for your feedback. I appreciate the advice from you both.

Still on the fence here... wondering if 5mm gives better retention in sheath (as I doubt that they made a separate sheath for the slightly thicker knife). My experience with leather is that it stretches over time and I worry about it slipping out over time.

Hhmoore- I guess I do consider a PM2 a heavy folder. might be why I am going to a fixed blade then? YMMV

I’m trying to make the same decision now. I’ll use the knife for EDC and I won’t be using it constantly. I assume the thinner N690 version would be the better slicer and that’s more important to me than ultimate edge retention. I’d love to hear from somebody who has owned both, or just the thinner version. Thanks all.
