Hi

I am kind of new in sharpening knives. Lately I borrow my friend's Lansky Diamond sharpening kit and I kind of like it. I am thinking about buying my own. I am thinking about this Lansky:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000B8JDRC/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A3MX7Z082YOVJJ&psc=1

or this one:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08G4M9LBZ/ref=ox_sc_act_title_11?smid=AD7C755W08DM6&psc=1

I already have a very fine diamond rod for the finishing touch like this one:
https://www.amazon.com/Kota-Japan-P...32&sprefix=diamond+sharpening+,aps,237&sr=8-5

Also I have from long time ago a ceramic sharpening stone set that goes to very fine grinding. So I don't need suggestions on the final touch stone or anything.

I thought I run this by you guys. If you have other suggestions, I am all ears. I want to keep in under $100 as I am not that into knife sharpening. I hate to use my friend's kit to sharpen all my knives risking wearing the diamond stones out on his.

Thanks

alan

I think the lansky system with a diamond rod is a great combo. Lansky for heavy sharpening once in a while and the diamond rod for frequent touch up, definitely a good price-performance set up.

It's very expensive, I am not taking up knives as a hobby, just need to do a good job sharpening some knives. I like to limit to $100 or under.

Thanks
You get what you pay for.

Maybe a cheap water stone then. It'll last a long time.

There are many great knife sharpening systems on the market. Buy one that you like and learn how to use it. A sharp knife is a sharp knife regardless of how or what you used to sharpen it.

Work Sharp Precision Adjust $60 and you can always add the elite kit later for $79
I really look at Work Sharp, my only reservation is it's not Diamond. I have been using my friends Lansky diamond sharpener, it works really good and I don't see any wear after like 7 pocket knife.

The ceramic stone I have is finer, but after a few knives, I do see wear. The question is how long the Work Sharp stone last.

BUT, I find this Work Sharp with the 3 upgrade stones for $120:
https://www.amazon.com/Upgrade-Prec...=elite+kit+for+work+sharp,aps,191&sr=8-2&th=1

I read this comes with DIAMOND stones and fine ceramic for final touch. This looks attractive. What do you think? I might be willing to bite the bullet and get this for once and for all!!!

Let me know.

I would spend a few extra bucks and get the Work Sharp. The down side to Lansky is that you are restricted to the fixed set of angles they provide, and there's a fair amount of slop in the system. The Work Sharp system fixes both of those problems.

Excellent point. The cheaper lansky never aligned perfectly to the existing angle on my edges.

No such problem with the work sharp, it's foolproof.

Yes the elite comes with 220, 320, 440, 600, 800 diamond if I remember correctly(I’m just to lazy to walk up stairs and look to be honest) and ceramic and a strop. I would recommend getting a table strop though just my opinion.

Thanks guys for the input. I have been comparing Work Sharp and Lansky. I have been using the Lansky, it's not bad.

My concern with Work Sharp is if I wear out one particular diamond stone, I cannot find individual stone I can buy. Meaning if I wear out just one of many, I have to spend $79 to buy the whole set.

I know for sure I can buy individual diamond stone for Lansky. They are like $22 each. I think I likely wear out the FINE one. So the Lansky is a PLUS for me.

Also, for whatever reason(I don't even know why), I have a holder similar to Lansky. This means I can just buy the Lansky fine diamond, the set of connecting rods for total of $30 to get started. Even if I get the next coarse up and the ultra fine ceramic, total will be $60 dollars.

Unless you guys know where to buy individual diamond stone for Work Sharp, Lansky seems to be the best choice for me.

I know they do sell the stone holder for Work Sharp for $22. But I still have to buy one stone at a time.

Can you give me the link so I can look at them?
