I have own a Aitor Commando for 10 years or so and have been using it in almost every camping and hiking trip.It is also my first knive.
The specs are
¡¤ Description: commando
¡¤ Code: 4701000
¡¤ Handle: black cast metal
¡¤ Sheath: black polyamide
¡¤ Measures:
¡¤ Blade: 6 3/4" inch
¡¤ Handle: 5 1/3" inch
¡¤ Weight: 610 gr
The handle is hollow with compass and a survival copsule although now i find it to be useless since there is very little a capsule can hold. Will have to add that with the handle being hollow the blade is being held in place by a pin but will have to say it is very strong and since the blade itself is not very large. The blade is decent with a sawback that is fuctional the blade design is good just that is pretty hard to sharpen. The sheath has a build in flear luncher which i have never use so no comment about it. The shealth inclusdes sharpening stone and some rope. The shealth has a good holding belt to keep the knive in place and its easy to relese with one hand and do not open easily.

In my opinion it is a pretty good survival knive and if anyone wants to know more about this knive please feel free to ask me.

(Note: This is my 1st review so feel free to coment. Thanks)

How is the handle comfort and security for most regular cutting, how is the feedback on chopping? Is the knife had to sharpen because of the steel, does it get blunt too fast or take damage to readily, or just difficult to get a fine edge on? Where is the knife balanced, is it blade heavy? Does the saw back have similar cutting speed to say chopping with the knife? Have you used any other knife of similar size?

The handle will be comfortable for most adult but will not be for children with small hands but that again this is a product that should not be handle by kids.
The knife is hard to sharpen due to its steel and the shape is neither a stright or a curve edge but shape is good for peirceing (double edge spear point) and for slicing and chopping.
It do hold its edge well i have use it in most of my camping and outhing trip and never need to sharpen during the trip. But i do maintain my blade well after the trip.
No the knife is not balenced if you intend to use it as a throwing knife. The handle is magnesium aluminum which is very solid and thus heavy. Unlike that M9 field knife that is blaced but the handle is plastic.
About the saw. The saw that you see in your link is a newer design which are in newer modles or commando. Mine have a differt saw back design. The saw cuts well just don't expect fine work for its large teeth and is fast too.
The choping ability is good too but never compare the sawing and choping speed.
I use the saw only when the wood is too big or too hard to chop. Not because of the knife but because of me. (Note i am not really a strong guy)

I have handle many many other knives. Mostly durning camping trips in scout. There are better knives out there but if you want one that has saw back and holow handle for survival item type knife Aitor is your choice.
Most pefer the jungle king 1 or 2 but i still think a sling is stupid coz is good for hunting bird and i need alot more food and i do not kill for fun only for food. But other that the sling factor both JK 1 and 2 are good choice too.

I have own the Aitor Commandor for 8 years. And although i have other knife this is about the only one i use during camping or hiking trips. Due to its the 1st decent one i own and althought i have other knife i do not use them very often they are simply for collection. Why replace a tool that has always work for you.
Now down to your question on have i ever sharpened the saw back? The answer is no coz i never need to. Even though i use it to saw wood about 1 to 2 inch for firewood.
I know you can sharpen saw back but i really dunno how. And i don't think i need to know how too since i don't think i ever need to.

Originally the Aitor Commando was marketed as the 'Aitor-Mauser Commando'.
Back then (late 80s early 90s??) this model had a 35mm signal flare firing pin attached to its sheath; which one fires holding the sheath sideways. A storage compartment for 6 (??) flares was to be found at the top/mouth of the sheath (some what like that in the Aitor JK 1 & 2).
And as in all older Aitor model the saw was double row saw teeth. Finer than the one found on the Glock 81 survival knife.
On the whole an interesting design. But I always thought its handle to be lacking a good grip, it being metal and near smooth; though you had diamond checks at its left and right sides.
Since we are at it, I would have preffered the Marto Brewer Explora Survival knife ( http://home.earthlink.net/~karlpmann/_uimages/Explorer.JPG ) for first choice if it boils down to these two makes.
Since Marto is Spanish made as well. I believe it was made of 440C ss.
While I am not qualified in giving a true opinion on steel type, it was my belive back then that Aitor steels were a bit more forgiving than Buck Knives during that late 80s through early 90s, as they held an edge better.
Just my 2 cents worth.

Yap thats the one i got. 'Aitor-Mauser Commando' is what written one the box.

Cliff Stamp do intend to buy the knive? If you do what do you intend to do with it?

Will have to say that 'Aitor-Mauser Commando' is my 1st knife purchase and i am still very happy with my choice. But back than i was young so i bought the Rambo surivial kind knife. Soon realise the survival capsule in the hollow handle surve little purpose a small tin can will do a better job and it fits in your pocket.

It is still a good survival knife with a hollow handle and the blade is hold by a pin( very strong though in this case you ask me since the blade is about 6 3/4" inch )but will not be stronger than a full tang. In my opinion anything bigger will not hold well using this method. To the best of my knowledge Aitor makes the best "Holow handle with survival capsule" kind of knife.

Aitors Bowie and Axe are nice too. Take a look at their website.http://www.aitor.com/

No I didn't intend to buy it, I would not want the ergonomic tradeoff of the hollow handle. I was curious about various aspect of performance. Chris Reeve also makes a very good hollow handle knife, no saw back, and a lot more expensive than the Aitor.
