To compliment the "All Time Fsvorite Movie" thread, I thought a similar thread for TV shows might be fun.

So what do you think are the best TV shows of all time? And to make it a little more interesting, let's break it down into three caregories: comedy, drama, and animation. No, four: add science fiction and fantasy.

My votes:

Comedy: There are a lot of really strong contenders out there. For the black-and-white era, shows, Dick Van Dyke would be ard to beat. There were lots of really strong contenders from the 70s, like Taxi or The Mary Tyler Moore Show. Or Barney Miller or Bob Newhart. There were some pretty strong Britcoms too, from The Good Life to Absolutely Fabulous to the British The Office, but while they may be charming or quaint, they're not first tier. Other than Cheers, the 80s were a wasteland. But I think the winner is Frasier. Sorry Seinfeld. Sorry Friends. Sorry all that increasingly woke crap that came after. It's Frasier. Unless it's The Office (U.S.), which is the only real competition, IMO. But the Office had some really weak seasons, and Frasier didn't.

Drama: When cable came into its own, TV drama really took off. The Shield was amazing, but so was The Wire. For a while, there were so many amazingly good shows, but the best of the best was Breaking Bad. It might be surpassed by Better Call Saul, but we won't know until it's over. The Shield had one of the best series wrap ups that television has ever known (some people don't recognize how great it was, but their opinions don't count), but Breaking Bad was even better. It was TV perfection from start to finish.

Animation. What can you say about The Simpsons? I really likedKing of the Hill too. But it's Rick and Morty. Until they screw it up.

SF/Fantasy: Game of Thrones had it in the bag, but they blew the ending. True Blood fell apart with vampire politics. The Star Treks are all fine, but "fine" doesn't win first place. Firefly barely got a chance. Farscape was just not as good as I remembered when I rewatched it. Babylon 5 might be the rightfull winner, but I'm giving it to the Battlestar Galactica reboot, despite the questionable ending. No. on second thought, B5 takes it for screwing up the ending less. Why cant the SF/Fantasy shows stick the ending? It's like with BSG where they kept telling us "they have a plan," but they pretty cearly didn't.

Comedy: The Ernie Kovacs Show, Sid Caesar's Your Show of Shows, The Jackie Gleason Show, Monty Python's Flying Circus

Science Fiction: Star Trek Deep Space Nine, Babylon 5, Battlestar Galactica (the 21st century version), Doctor Who 1974-81 (Tom Baker as the Doctor)

Westerns: Gunsmoke 1955-1961, 30 minutes B&W with Dennis Weaver as Chester

Serious drama: The Philco Television Playhouse, Kraft Television Theatre, Studio One, Playhouse 90, BBC's An Age of Kings

Music: Max Morath's The Ragtime Era and Turn of the Century, Pete Seeger's Rainbow Quest, Leonard Bernstein's Young People's Concerts

Not strictly speaking a TV series, but everyone in my generation watched RKO's 1936 serial Flash Gordon on daytime TV. It was a big influence, and after you'd seen all the episodes twice you knew the best parts of Les Preludes and the Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture by heart. George Lucas wanted to remake it as a feature-length film, but there were three sets of rights — comic strip, movie, TV — and they couldn't agree on a deal. That's how we got Star Wars.

I forgot animation: The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends

5. Perry Mason
4. Columbo
3. Seinfeld
2. Breaking Bad
1. X-Files

You figure what category they belong to . . . some of these have elements of several of the categories.

Cannot fully evaluate Better Call Saul until it wraps . . . but it could wind up in top five.

For simplicity, I excluded some pay-streaming and pay-cable series like "Bosch," "Game of Thrones," "Jack Ryan," etc. and limited series like "True Detective" and "Fargo" which changed directors, cast, etc. from season to season.

The Andy Griffith Show, The Dukes of Hazzard, All In The Family, M*A*S*H, King of the Hill, I Love Lucy, Green Acres.

Married with Children, Rick and Morty, Dukes of Hazzard, All in the Family....................... As a kid, Alf, My Cousin Vinny, Thundercats, Dukes of Hazzard, GI Joe, Transformers, Original MacGyver

I have always been a big fan of the original 1964 series Johnny Quest. The episodes were alway interesting, well written and well animated. The main protagonist may have been a 10 year old, but the stories were plotted for adults (they were like 60 minute 007 movies).

I also have to include the Twilight Zone. Good imaginative story telling with always interesting and varied plot lines.

Then there was the excellent and long running series The Avengers (Patrick Macnee and Diana Rigg). I never could decide if they were a patriotic counter terrorist team or just a psychopathic killer and his psychiatrist handler. John Steed would always great everyone with a polite and gentlemanly smile before he killed them. Probably, killed thousands over the course of the series. Its a good thing Emma was around to keep him pointed at the right targets. A very well produced show.

And, there is no way we can leave the original Star Trek out of this. Their influence has been felt the world over for over 50 years.

For shows that we’re great their entire run:
Homicide: Life On The Streets
Deadwood (HBO should die for bailing on this show)
The Wire
The Shield
Breaking Bad / Better Call Saul
Justified

For shows that had some great seasons, but not the entire run:
The Walking Dead
Homeland (I hate putting it in this section, but season 3 was a mess)
The X-Files
Dexter
The Sopranos
Millennium (definitely not everyone‘s cup of tea, but I enjoyed it quite a lot)

Seinfeld
Mash
Hogans Heroes (the only tv series I own on DVD)
Bugs Bunny/Looney Tunes from the 80s.

Comedy: WKRP in Cincinnati
Science Fiction: SG-1
Animation: Simpsons
Drama: NCIS. When I was in Tennessee week before last, some of the satellite channels like ION, etc were running all day marathons of NCIS. I recorded a bunch of them to watch at night. Reminded me of why the show has lasted so long. Its maybe lost its way a little in the last couple of seasons, but those early ones were a great mix of comedy, drama, and mystery. Great characters.
