Maybe a re-post. This is a cool video I ran across on wimp.
http://wimp.com/alonewilderness/

I like the shot were they show all or most of the tools he had with him.

The only blade I really saw was a slippie of some sort. Makes me think that sometimes I over pack :p

Dick Prenneke is a legend to most on this forum. I have both the books and all 4 videos. I infact brought alone in the wilderness with me to Iraq. I want to visit Alaska and visit twin lakes to see his cabin and stomping grounds.

Weird timing on the post FYI. I was just talking with my friend about this on Monday I think it was.

I watch the videos everytime that they are on public television. He is an amazing craftsman.

I've seen this a few times, this guy is the person who got me interested in the outdoors in every aspect, he kind of reminds me of my dad and grandfather too.

Edit: Someone needs to ID that knife, curiosity is gonna kill me, i thought OT first, but at some angles it kind of looks like a buck, but im not sure of the timeline here.

I'm pretty sure that's the one in this contest in the "Traditional" forum:

I need to buy this on DVD. Truly a legend. On this forum this thread would be like saying “Here is George Washington. He was the first POTUS.” :D But I could talk about Dick’s adventure all day.

My favorite part is when he says “This morning it was a comfortable 31 degrees in the cabin” or whatever temp it was.

Thats pretty cool. I will have to watch it now.
I could not do that myself, I would miss my family and friends to much.

This amazing man was a classic lesson in what we really don't need in the wilderness. It seems like the ax and the pocket knife took care of everything he had to do.

Software over hardware. Dick was an amazing man.

seems like an entirely different species back then compared to what a lot of us are like these days eh?

The next generation guys I really enjoy are both the fellas from Dual Survival.

Cody Lundin may be, arguably the BEST primitive living instructor alive that I am aware of.

I believe he passed on in 2003 or about there.

I remember reading someplace that he was getting on in years, and went to live with his brother in California.

That's to bad.
I hope someone is still taking care of his cabin, I would love to check it out someday.

I believe the National Parks Service is taking care of it and it is a tourist attraction now. I'd love to go visit someday too.

There are 6 parts to this video. If searched on Youtube you can find them easily. Absolutely inspirational. I knew of mountain men living in the wilderness, but never knew of one so eloquently putting the experience into video and words. The narrator is spectacular, and the craftsmanship of Dick Proenneke is out of this world. He is indeed of an older species (as noted above by Jesse D.L) that knew something of self reliance and a true Get 'R Done Attitude.
I would have to admit that as much as I know for a city slicker about the woods, It would not hold a candle stick next to his work, imagination, and creativity. God Bless men like him and the men of the "Greatest Generation".
Explorers are a dying breed !!
